Hi all, i have a home network nicely set up the way i like it, with my superhub below my desk connected to a gigabit switch and to the wall's optical input. My TV is in the next room but up until today i haven't had a tv package so to speak and only use it for netflix etc.

Any way, virgin have talked me into a deal which has meant they've just sent me a V6 box. The first thing to do is connect the optical cable that's currently in my superhub to a splitter they provide. Then only cable from the splitter goes back to my superhub and the other cable goes into my v6 tv box.

The trouble is - those two cables are extremely short and as previously stated, my hub and tv are in different rooms.

What's my best bet here? Does the optical cable have to be connected via the splitter at all times? I have another optical wall socket near the tv...can i use that without me having to connect to the superhub?

the ethernet is hardwired in via another switch that i have near the tv. It's definitely connected to the internet fine (great lights etc) but the optical cable isn't connected back to the superhub

Not sure what you mean by optical cable? Do you mean the VM coxial cable that goes into the back of the Superhub and TV set top boxes? My parents have the v6 box and its just connected back to the Superhub via wireless for its Internet access (they are in different rooms and have their own separate coaxial cables going into them).

Are you sure? I know nothing about the v6 but previous boxes had their own dedicated connection over the coax

so they have no coaxial cable going into the v6 itself? Or they have cable but it goes into a socket in their wall rather than back to the hub?

Both boxes will need coax connections, the superhub needs it for the broadband, the v6 box needs it for the tv signal. They are required at all times.

What does the "other wall socket by the tv" hook up to? Is that not just your normal TV aerial?

You could extend the TV side of the splitter some how, through the wall? It's just coax cable.

well, i've got an engineer booked tomorrow so hopefully they will sort it out.

The other socket by the tv was previously just plugged into my tv. It was put there by an electritian during a recent refirb so i think it's probably cable ready.

Yea, sounds like the other end of that is hooked up to the TV aerial, not the inbound VM cable connection.

Same type of cable, but they do different things.

thanks, so is it likely that the engineer is going to have to put additional cable in / along wall / under door etc :(

Yes, definitely. However, if your TV is on an outside wall (or close to it), you can get them to put a splitter in your brown box on the outside of the house. One coax cable (they are not optical or fibre) will go as it does now to your existing internal wall box that attaches to your superhub. The other one can go around the outside of your house where the VM guys can drill a hole, run the cable through the wall and put in another internal white box near your TV. From there, they will connect another bit of coax to the Tivo V6.

Really VM should have checked with you to see if you had a cable connection near to your TV as without it the Tivo is pretty useless.

Sorry if my reply wasn't clear, yes they do each still have their own coaxial cable but in the info it says the v6 box also needs Ethernet to the Superhub which isn't true - it can use wireless as well.
