as xbox forums are down i thought it would be worth a shot on here.

i have just moved back into my parents house for a while, now needing to get on xbox live i have had to change the network settings. i am connecting to a linksys wireless adsl router (exactly the same as mine) but i am unable to get passed at the ip address stage.

i have selected the network, and put in the correct WEP key. always fails on ip address though. what do i need to do in order to get this working?

thanks.

You may need to access your router control panel while the 360 is connected and assign it an IP address. I didn't need to do this on my own router, but it's possible yours hasn't automatically assigned an address to the 360.

ok, so i have looked for the 'connected wireless clients' in the router setup, and there is the desktop with name, ip address and mac address. then there is a row with just the mac address in it, this matches the 360.

but i havent got a clue as to how i assign the ip addresto the 360 via the router. its a linksys wag354g v2

EDIT: im also pretty certain the router should assign the ip address to the 360 automatically, and should be 192.168.1.xx but it is appearing on the 360 as the ip address 169.254.1.xx

I'm afraid I can't be any real help in assigning the IP address, as I said mine did it automatically. If you have a manual for your router, now would be the time to take a look at it.

It could be because Xbox Live is down?

Also, just force an IP address on the xbox360 by going to network settings and manually add it in.

could that be it?? i thought if live was down it would fail at the xbox live stage, not so early on in setting up the connection.

thanks anyway, i really dont know what to do now (my parents are useless at keeping boxes and manuals, guess in searching google for a manual to d/l now!). when i set it up with my router it was all automatic and took about 2 minutes.

The only additional thing I could recommend is to go into the manual settings on the Xbxo360, and force the gateway to that of the router and then set a manual ip address within the range of the router but obviously not the same as your PC.

Your router has a built in DHCP server, which should assign the client with an IP when it requests one.

I believe that the 360's wireless network controller works with both WEP and WPA-PSK encryption, but try connecting with the wireless security disabled in the router, as this will determine whether or not this is the issue.

I've never had issues hooking any WiFi devices up to my WRT, laptops, pda's, phones, but not a 360, I just don't need WiFi for the 360 as its about a meter or so away from my router, lol.

Some Routers have firmware bugs causing the DHCP server to die for unknown reasons, so perform a power cycle to be sure. Power cycle your 360 too...

See how it goes from there :)

169 is APIPA I think. I'm pretty sure DHCP wouldn't automatically give an IP address in that range.

IP's in the 169. range are allocated when the DHCP client fails to obtain an IP, under Windows at least.

Linksys routers usually dole out IP's from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149, with the router actually residing at 192.168.1.1
