Trouble with Nikon 4600 coolpix

Just had this a few days, and the auto mode leaves a lot to be desired, a lot of the images are blurred and the flash doesn't ever fire (the flash fires when in other modes). I get blurring no matter what the light conditions are.
This is my first experience with a digital camera, is my experience typical or am i just crap, or is the camera crap?
I was expecting to be able to just point and shoot and get better results than this.

there should be a flash button on the camera that switches between flash modes ie. always makes the flash fire, auto flash (flashes when needed) or and turns it off

that may help - also helps if you have a lot of light is the place your taking photos
