Troubleshooting a freeze

Been plagued by this issue ever since I rebuilt my system a year or so ago.
Since then, new graphics card, ram, PSU have seen their way in the last month or two so I'm ruling them out of the equation.

How do I go about finding out what is wrong?

The most common factor I can figure is that heavy net usage seems to be a constant in any freeze. This can be having a load of things on the go in Firefox, upping one of my dj mixes to a torrent site.

My wifi card is a component left over from an original build. Its a mystery what it is so I've never updated drivers. It couldn't be that could it?

Not sure what steps to take to point my finger at the problem! Wondered if you guys on here could help at all?

AMD 4000+ X2
Asus M2N mobo
4GB DDR 6400
Corsair 520w modular affair
Ati 4870
Audio is Terratec Fun 5.1
Wifi is ?
3 x SATA hdd

No clocking or anything of that sort going on. My idea of modifying extends as far as putting cable ties on things.

Gaming is fine. Browsing about at the moment is fine. I stuck a new mix up last night to a site and I bet within about 10 mins or so of uTor being on, it will die. I also get phases. I can be stable for ages... then one day, BAM.

Hm I did give that a go, the odd thing is that the issue has spread across the current and previous crop of ram.

I'll have another try though!

I have to reset each time. System log tells me nothing.

EDIT:

I have an idea. Might try and borrow a USB network dongle off IT, disable my PCI one and rag that silly, see what happens. If it hangs then, I can cross the card off the list of potential areas for error. I just have this inkling that because its old, because its some misc unknown make... perhaps there is an incompatibility going on.
