I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), running El Capitan 10.11.3 (15D21).

Recently, the system has started to randomly hang for about 15 seconds, followed by an automatic reboot to the log in screen. There doesn't seem to be a usage pattern that causes these random reboots.

I have no idea how to troubleshoot Macs and even Apple's support pages are confusing. The troubleshooting steps they list don't appear to fit my model?

  • If you have a new Mac (mid-2013 or later), use Apple Diagnostics, which is built into your Mac. - My Mac pre-dates this model
  • If your Mac has OS X v10.8.3 or earlier, use Apple Hardware Test, which is built into your Mac. - My OS is later than this
  • If you updated your Mac to OS X v10.8.4 or later, use the system software disc or USB flash drive that came with your Mac. - I don't believe my Mac came with a USB flash drive and obviously doesn't have any optical media drive

Any ideas on where to look?
