Building up a PC for a friend of a friend for their 11 year old for Christmas and having some troubles.

I’m no beginner but this one has me scratching my head.

Asrock B450 steel legend bought here on MM, pretty sure it works OK. When I connect everything up and hit the power switch on the PSU I get RGB like a Christmas tree and some fans start lazily spinning. The power button, it does nothing other than make a click somewhere within the PC.

As it’s a 5000 series chip I assumed it might be a BIOS issue. I happen to have a 3600 so swapped that in. Same thing. Swapped the 32 GB of crucial RAM out for a Teamgroup 16 GB kit. Still nothing. No beeps, no lights that I can see. Pretty sure the graphics card works (or isn’t the issue) as I swapped in a very old GTX780 I have lying around and the same thing, disco lights but no post or beeps. Currently swapping out the motherboard for a crappy old A320 board I have too. Anyone else have any other thoughts or ideas? I don’t have a spare PSU to test though.

Hmm, swapped the A320 in and it boots OK, at least to the BIOS screen. Might be motherboard then. Phooey. (My current favourite word of the moment)

try the board cpu and one stick of ram on a desk and see if it boots.
dont fit a cooler incase that's the problem, its ok to power cycle like this

and somthing ive done before check the motherboard standoff's lol

Checked all these already, nothing where they shouldn’t be. Ran the A320 with no cooler and got the gigabyte splash screen. Have also tried two different ram kits, one of which I know works as it came out of my working machine when I upgraded on a whim from 3200MHz to 3600MHz.

I have a wanted thread up looking for a B4/550 board. Annoying this is!

That I’m unsure of, but there’s still no boot with a Ryzen 3600 and the board has support for this off the bat I believe.
Did it have Ryzen 3000 ready on the box? Most B450 boards have support, but not all of them and from what I can see on the website the shipping BIOS of this board did not. Though, if the BIOS doesn't have support I'd expect a black screen with all fans running, not a click.

you could try flash back, it should then have some life without a CPU in it. but for me the click is somthing tripping

Unlikely as I’d suspect you’d have noticed but check the socket for signs of TIM - a drop of conductive paste could be causing a short.

Edit: even if nothings visible a spray of isopropyl would do no harm. Also check mobo 24pin and 4/8 pin sockets for damage/foreign material.

Something like a Ryzen 1600 was supported from the first bios, 3600 was from bios version P2.30.

Can get one for £20 from SH shop, or maybe see if you can get one on MM. (maybe someone will lend you one)
