Hi all,

My brother has built his future brother in law a gaming build but it doesn't boot!

My initial thought was a lack of motherboard mounting holes leaving the motherboard ill mounted but I'm skeptical if that is even important anymore?

Built up and powered on the PC powered up with no POST and powered down after 30 seconds before self powering up again and was stuck in this cycle.

So the dismantling began, Optical Drive, HDD, Graphics Card, RAM and peripherals out all one by one with no change in boot up behavior, and so I moved on to the CPU when removed the motherboard will still not POST but it now self powers up (no pressing the power button) and powered up and down repeated every 5 seconds.

My initial taught is the motherboard is faulty I have tried powering it up mounted in the case and out of the case with no difference in the results.

Its been a while since I have done some troubleshooting so would anyone kindly offer me advice if I have missed anything? or confirm my diagnosis.

Thanks very much

Rob :)

Build is a:
Gigabyte GA-Z170X - Gaming 3
Intel 6700k i7 (1151)
2 x Corsair 8GB DDR4
Geforce GTX 970
600w Corsair CX600M

Sounds like the motherboard doesnt like the RAM. Try just one stick in DIMM1 and see what happens.

I take it both the 24 pin PSU and 4/8 pin CPU is plugged into the motherboard ?
Does the Gaming 3 have a LED readout code on the board ?

Have you tried resetting CMOS ?

Also when you switch in on hold down ALT and keep tapping F12 just in case its a primary/secondary BIOS issue.

There's absolutely no video output at all so I have no indication of any errors visually, and can't enter the BIOS

Ive tried with multiple RAM slots and with no RAM at all, no difference in output,

Tried clearing CMOS

Yes all 8pin CPU and 24Pin PSU adapters both plugged in. everything powers up all fans etc.

there's no LED readout output which is puzzling because my motherboard is about 3 years older and it does have LED readout.

Cheers Rob

sounds like its either the motherboard or the RAM.

More likely it doesnt like the RAM. I had same problem with my RAM and my Gigabyte board. Had to swap it for different RAM and then it worked okay.

Surely if its a RAM issue I should have visual output? I should be able to POST with no RAM installed at all, granted I wouldn't get much further but I'm sure I should get some output.

no you get no display with no RAM installed normally it beeps.
Mine did same as yours kept rebooting with no display.

Sounds like you have found the problem. I would have tried to bend it back in place. Done it a few times successfully. My maximum success was restoring 4 bent pins.

Just be careful taking it back because they can claim you damaged it by improper seating of the CPU and refuse the return.
