Troubleshooting possible broken CPU

Hello, I've built this rig: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=22650701#post22650701

I could not get it to boot using the i5 CPU. I could however, get it to boot no problem at all using a different intel CPU (a 2.4ghz dual core). I tried the i5 CPU in the previously working rig I took the 2.4ghz CPU out of and that system would also not boot using the i5 CPU.

Am I correct in assuming the CPU is faulty or is there something I'm missing?

Your reasoning looks sound. Could try a bios update using the dual core chip, but I don't expect it to help.

Good luck with the RMA. Processors don't break often so the monkey on the end of the phone may take some convincing.

How far into the boot does it get with the suspected broken CPU?
The fans turn and that's it. Absolutely no other signs of life. I can't get any video out at all through the mobo's vga or throught the graphics card. I've tried everything, one stick of memory at a time, no graphics card, different tv/monitor, resetting the bios etc

I can get into the bios with another cpu and I can use the graphics card and the mobo's vga output to get video out. I didn't go so far as to install the os incase it was the mobo at fault because it's an OEM version of windows I'll be installing, but seeing as I could get into the bios and I was asked for something to boot with on boot, I believe the mobo to be functional and the CPU to be non functioning.

I tried the CPU in my usual PC which is fully functioning with my working CPU, which also allowed me to get into the bios on my new build. When I put the "non working" cpu into my usual build, the fans turned and I got absolutely no video out again, through the mobo's vga or through the graphics card.

Wouldn't that be enough to suggest that the CPU just doesn't work?

Thanks for confirming. It's a little troubling because my RMA results were that it "posted fine" but I really don't see how that's even possible. It flat out didn't work in two PCs but another cpu allowed both to run without any problem at all. I don't see it being a bios issue either as I have updated my bios on my main pc, and of course the new mobo would be stock and unchanged.

I guess I'll have to wait until I get it back and test it again, but I'm 99% certain the CPU is a dud given my results with another cpu and pc. It's the only part that didn't work in either pc so I'm wondering just what else the problem could possibly be because I'm out of ideas.

Yeah, that is always the dreaded response when you RMA something. Did you go with the H61 board? Because it might need a BIOS update to use IB CPUs- it should still boot however.

Yes I went with the H61. I should be getting the CPU back sometime tomorrow. I figure I'll actually install the os and everything using my working CPU so I can update the bios/graphics drivers for the i5 and anything I can think of to try to get the i5 working. It is still odd to me it wouldn't work in 2 PCs but ok, if there's a chance it's the bios needing updated, I'll do that first before I take it any further.

If you went with the Gigabyte motherboard their is only one BIOS release which is F4 and all cpu's are supported by this including the new IB i3 cpu's.

So there would be no point in flashing it?

This is the one I have that did work with the dual core cpu http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4089#bios

They claimed to have tested it on 3 motherboards and they all posted ok but I got nothing on 2 and another cpu allowed for both to work flawlessly. I'm at a loss for what else I can do at this point.

Is there any chance it would be a driver issue? I don't have any graphics drivers for the i5 installed or anything on either pc so it could be why I got no video out but it seems like a shot in the dark to me.

Would intel cover this if I still suspect a faulty cpu when I get it back and test it again, as I figure it would still be under warranty.
