I've just created 2 non-hidden partitions and have protected them with truecrypt. Problem is that when the drives aren't mounted and i double click on any of the encrypted drives in 'my computer' a window pops up telling me that the drive is not formatted and asks me whether i want to format the drive. Is there any way i can stop this message from coming up to prevent an accidental format? I know there are a couple of steps before format but i would prefer this option not to be that readily available.

I have the same issue and find it just as irritating.

Just had a thought though. Why not just go to disk management ([START] -> [Right Click] "My Computer" -> 'Manage' -> "Disk Management') then just unassign a drive letter to the unencrypted drive mount ([Right click] volume to hide -> "Change drive letter or path" -> [Left click] volume letter -> "Remove"). As ling as it is not the C: it should remove it from explorer but when you enter the password you should get a new drive pop up so this will hopefully not be affected.

I have not tried this but will do so when I get home tonight.

I use the above method on my laptop and eee with USB disks which have been encrypted with truecrypt. It works exactly as you state above and i haven't had any issues doing this.
