Hi atm i am running truenas with 3 disks in a raid z1 setup, now i am in the process of removing all data and then going adding another drive of the same make ,model ,capacity. This is only to use as a media server for plex and also store photos (which are backed up elsewhere) and i am looking for some help on which type of raid to set this up with, coming from a long time whs setup so only used to drivepools of different sizes ?
Thanks

If you re just storing media and running Plex, why have you chosen ZFS? You've already realised the obvious problem on growing a VDEV, why not take the next step and ask if a better way exists for your intended usage? Hint: UnRAID is the natural progression from your WHS days, it supports mismatched pool sizes as WHS did and allows you to run Plex in docker on the same box along with all the other *arrs etc.

thanks will have a look at it

The massive advantage UnRAID has for a media server is that it allows you to buy whatever makes the best £/TB sense at the time you need drives to expand the pool and other than the largest drive which is always parity (you can have upto two), it goes straight into the storage pool.
