Trulli out Petrov in

Yup, Trulli has never had it in my book. Like many before him, on his day epic, but his day lasts 1 lap 3 times a year.

Jarno Trulli and Jean Alesi won the same amount of GPs. Proof, if ever it was needed, that statistics do not tell the whole story.

Not that some folks on here would understand, of course. Far too complicated to think that one guy could have a single win to his name and be a mere journeyman, and another guy could have a single win to his name and be something special....

Alesi only won a single race? Your right JRS, that does show that stats are only half the picture.

Trulli was solid, but the constant moaning about power steering was wearing thin and looking like someone scraping the barrel for excuses to cover his lack of pace. That said, Petrov is firmly in the "paying for a seat" camp, and I'm not a fan of that area, so we shall have to see if he starts to live up to expectation, rather than just being Heikkis piggy bank.

TBH I'm not against paid drivers per se. It's been a part of the sport for many many years now. However the dynamic was to have one experienced hand who took a wage (Eg. Damon Hill at Arrows in 1997) and a pay driver who showed talent but maybe wasn't top class (Eg. Pedro Diniz at Arrows in 1997). That's why I've no issue with Caterham in doing this.

Williams on the other hand should know better. Two pay drivers, one of which has had a couple of good races and a lot of mediocre ones (even excluding the HRT drives). And the other is a crash magnet with very dubious backers in a country who are most likely to launch a fraud investigation into both where the money for his seat is coming from, and why.

Yeah, its nothing new, but its getting worse. Top drivers are being left out in the cold if they don't bring enough money. Gone are the days of putting a number of guys against each other and hiring the fastest.

but the rules don't allow that sort of thing anymore, yes its partly to do with money but if they can't properly evaluate a number of drivers they will go for someone who is proven or someone who will pay

I think Caterham were expecting Trulli to use his experience to develop the car, which is understandable. I don't think he has done what they thought he would though.

Despite being a cash up front driver, I've always liked Petrov. :)

As for Trulli, I'm amazed it's taken so long for him to get the heave-ho.

He's always been a dead-weight in my eyes, even during his occasional one lap wonder phase at Toyota I wasn't impressed. If he was supposed to be some development guru, then he failed at that too.

Really, Jarno? You sure you didn't just dream it?

His time at Toyota would have been when Ferrari were winning Championships with Schumacher, then looking to replace him with Kimi, and then replace Kimi with Alonso, so it was clearly for a 2nd driver role if at all, and Massa is far better than Jarno.

Maybe as a reserve driver, but as a race seat, thats surely got to be made up rubbish hasn't it? Just an attempt at keeping his name in the news.

Keep dreaming Jarno. Or maybe he's been drinking to much of his wine now that he's got time on his hands.
