Hey

Weirdly, when I plug in my USB printer (i dont have the space to keep it plugged in all the time), my volume gets reduced to a fraction of what it is currently at, so if im listening to music, I have to ramp up my speakers to hear it.

No volume controls actually get adjusted, so Windows is still at max, the media player is still at max... it just goes dead quiet!

Ever heard of this?

It's a long shot but check under "control panel>hardware & sound>sound>communications" and change it to do nothing when windows detects communication activity.

Sometimes non-communication devices can trigger this auto volume reduction.
