New to apps, and will be new to doing anything more than a simple exercises to be honest.

I know android studio is the official IDE. but VS 3015 can be used too, which in already OK with really.

Any compelling reason for a newbie to choose one over the other?

"To build an app for Android or iOS, install Xamarin"

Which means the interface is nothing like you are used to and is a horrible to work with. I wasted a couple ofweeks trying to do that before deciding Android Studio is a much better solution.

I do a fair bit of mobile dev and I use Android Studio. I used to use Eclipse till they decided Android Studio was a better option. Took some getting used to (after eclipse) but it's a nice IDE. I am Anti-Apple completely but when I dev for IOS, XCode is awesome - I've just vomitted a little in my mouth :(

Sorry for the late reply, it's been a hectic week!

So ya, I will stick with android studio. That said I should probably learn regular Java first!

Nah! Learn as you go. It's easier when you're working toward something you want as opposed to somehting from a tutorial. Of course, that just my opinion :)
