Here I am trying to decide what I want for a new PC, quite honestly I dont know what to go for there is so much choice. I do however feel the need to put it together myself to get exactly what I want.

AMD or Intel that is the question, I cant decide. To try and figure it out I am going to cost how much an intel system will cost me and then do the same for the AMD system and see what looks better on paper.

Ill build completely from scratch so I need.

Processor

Motherboard

Memory

Graphics card

These first ones will obviously change depending on whether I want intel or AMD and how much I spend on the chip and so on. But there are going to be some constants to the design. Things that wont change regardless of the chip I choose.

These are the following plus my considerations. Can I get some help choosing the following parts first.

CASE:

Antec 900 £70 - it looks a little ugly tho

Arctic Cooling T2 Pro £70 supposed to be silent but is it a little too plain?

Coolermaster wave £90

NZXT £94

Thermal take Tsunami. £72

Ideally the case I use needs to take ATX boards and have room for all sizes of graphics cards obviously. Of course if someone can find a mini case that fits atx boards and 8800 GTX cards then ill consider it. A quiet case might be nice this time too.

Harddrive/s:

Choice here is do I go for one drive, or go for 2 drives to ensure I have a spare in case one dies one to move to.

So my choice is

150GB WD Raptor £150

or

74GB WD Raptor £104 and a 160GB WD Caviar £43.46

yes its a wierd way round that I wouldnt be considering raiding them, but it gives me a storage drive and a lightning fast drive for games. I have a raptor at the moment only a 32GB but its fantastic.

Power Supply:

no idea here

Optical Drive:

For completeness I was considering a lightscribe DVD-rw say the NEC ND7173 £21.74

Miscellaneous:

Sound proof pack?

cables

Arctic silver £7

fans

Operating System:

Vista home premium (about £80 OEM)

or

Vista Ultimate (about £140 OEM)

Would there be any benefit from the ultimate version over the premium? would I notice?

Once I have figured out what I want for this lot I can get an idea about how much I can spend on the really important bits. My budget is fairly flexible and this wont be a cheap pc. However I am not interested in spending money for moneys sake, like say the fatality case at £300 (why?) or the physx card (can come later if I need). I have a nice X-Fi soundcard that will be migrating to the new pc so I dont need one of those.

Vista won't be shipped until end of this month, I'd personally go for the Home Premium 32 / 64 bit oem or upgrade version if you have WinXP.

The Antec 900 is not very spacious inside and has problems with dust because of its huge fans and no filters. Other popular choices are:

Antec P180
Lian-Li PC7
AKASA Eclipse 62

As with the PSU I'm sure lots of people here will recommend Corsair ones as they are the best value for money ones atm. Other brands like Seasonic (who oems Corsair PSUs), Tagan, OCZ, Antec, & Enermax are very good. Go for at least 500W for future DX10 cards.

Raptors are good but far too expensive for what they are imo. A good WD Cavier or Seagate Barracuda will perform very well for a lot less. Also I don't think it's worth it to run Raid as there is little performance increase except in benchmarks. Unless you will be running Raid 1 for backups.

Definately go Intel if you have the money they have the best performing processors atm at least until the end of this year, as for which one to go for with what mobo / RAM and graphics really depends on how much you are willing to spend.

budget set up:

E6300 OEM + Arctic Freezer 7 Pro
Gigabyte DS3 / ASUS P5B
OCUK Value 2Gb PC6400
7900GS / 1950Pro

High End:

E6600 + Scythe Ninja / Tuniq Tower
ASUS P5W DH / Striker Extreme or other 680i mobos
Crucial 10th Anniversary 2Gb PC5300 / Corsair Dominator 2Gb PC6400
8800GTX

Thanks for the help...

lots of choices on the case. Just have to make up my mind on which one seems right for me. At least I can cross off the Antec 900. Love to know any opinions of anyone who has any of those mentioned. Seems like its time to go intel then with the chip.

I quite like the raptor drives as they are quite nice and fast, your right in that they are a bit of a luxury over what else can be bought thats why I was thinking of a trade off with a smaller raptor and a caviar.

If it helps im planning on spending about £1500 on a system, dont need a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. So I should have oodles to play with.

Not true at all the Antec 900 has no problem with dust, well no more than any other case, and it can fit a 8800GTX so!!!!! Go Figure!!!

OK obviously I heard it wrong then, but i never said it won't fit a 8800GTX.

You said its not very spacious, well if it fits a 8800GTX you have to call it spacious I mean what does that make a case which doesn't fit a 8800GTX?

Well, I think I have decided on a case
I quite like the Thermaltake Tsunami, question is will it take the 8800 cards?

The Antec 900 doesnt really do too much for me,
The coolermaster wave would be my first choice but it only has 80mm fans for cooling, I think I want to try to make this PC a little quieter than the current.
The NZXT not sure on
The Antec P180, perhaps, looks wise I think the tsunami has it.
Same with the Lian Li, and perhaps the Akasa Eclipse.

Well I was gonna go for the wavemaster before I decided on the Lian Li PC7.

Was gonna suggest PC7 but fans are louder than I expected so not so good if you want a silent case.

Not too worried about silent, but the Asus Vento I have right now lives up to its name. Ugly loud and large is about all you can say for it.

LOL can't agree more!! My mate has a blue one and it is very cramped inside, can barely fit his 6800GT with Arctic Silencer.

Well that case then I'd highly recommend the PC7, excellent build quality and value for money. It comes with 1 120mm intake and exhaust fan fitted. You can also fit an optional 80mm fan at the top, too.

if you do decide to get this just make sure you fit the PSU before anything else, because PSU with 120mm fan grill at the bottom may not go through from the rear and has to be installed from inside the case, which is impossible if you have already installed mobo and HSF.

Well this is what I was looking at

The basics.

Thermaltake Tsunami case £72

Corsair HX 520 PSU £70.5

Hard drives, 74GB Raptor £105, 160GB Caviar £44

DVD-RW NEC £21

4 scythe case fans £50

Arctic Silver £7

OS: Vista home premium OEM £80

Basics come to £450.

Intel Build:

E6600 £215

BFG nforce 680 motherboard £182

Corsair 2GB dominator pc6400 ram £199.74

Tuniq CPU cooler £27

Total for intel parts £624

AMD Build

AMD 64 X2 5000+ £199.74

Gigabyte GA M590 sli £123.36

Corsair 2GB PC6400 ram £199.74

Scythe Ninja Tower £38.76

AMD total £562

Graphics card BFG 8800 £387.74

Intel total cost roughly £1462

AMD total cost roughly £1400

As I can see it the extra 60quid is well spent on the E6600 chip.
Can I get opinions on the selection, does it sound right, will it all fit the case etc...

Hey

Well the intel is clearly the better spec out of the two listed, well worth the extra £60 due to the known extra performance and overclocking abilities!
