Trying to educate myself - is it normal for an Asian man to have two different names?

Common in hindu cultures anyway. Mostly everyone in my family has a christian firstname and an indian one, surname always remains the same. E.g mine is Darren Rakesh...

Is that culture or modern innovation mate ?

I have noticed this behavour for bengali's too. As an example my son is a half bread(on the bengali side) but the in-laws have not adopted an addition name like for others

Go figure

EDIT: Come to think about it nor does my second son :o

It's not that uncommon for non asian people either.

I worked in a company where quite a few English people went by their middle names, I only know because someone in hr told me, it was not an average company most people had to have a degree with a 1/1

I know quite a few Indians who have their English name they go by which is different to their real name

Didn't come across like that to me  :( (I'll obviously accept what you say if that is what the OP is asking :-) )

I 100% know what the OP is asking because I'm the OP :)
There is absolutely nothing sinister about these two blokes except that they both have alternative Asian names.
I reckon if I told you their names & alternative names somebody would pick up on it straight away as being for religious reasons but I can't give the names out.

Yep muslim name or surname.

;) Might have something to do with the OP.

So basically a Muslim man could have his first name & surname, go through Uni, go to Medical School, get to a very high position and then all of a sudden get very religious and take on a new religious name?
(Obviously I know Cat Stevens & Cassius Clay did this but they weren't Muslims to start off with).

Or chap might be using someone elses certs to place himself higher in the food chain, thinking no one will ever find out.
Might be worth a trawl of the GMC website under find a doctor and see if both names are registered, and in his HR file see how back his names correspond with the one he is currently using.
Seen more than one application terminates when historical data suggested that at some point two people had merged into one.

I've always wondered about there being so many Muslims called Mohammed something or other. I understand it's for religious reasons but it must get awfy confusing if you are looking for someone of that name. Do they use other names for family or public situations?
Imagine if you popped into a mosque looking for Mohammed?

I was at uni with a chinese guy, his name was Yu Cheng (no idea how to pronounce it) But he got everyone to call him Ray?!?!

Why is that normal, his name should just be Yu (pronounced "you" I suppose)

Omg WOW!! Such a wild unpronounceable name, how zany of his parents to come up with something so impossible to read as Yu
