I'm about to get a new PC build and will be wanting a new monitor to go with it. 27" minimum around £400. I'll be using it for photo/video editing more than gaming, so from what I can make out, I'll be needing an IPS monitor.

If I'm not gaming in 4K (at least not for now), would a 4K monitor be a waste of time? I've seen some decent LG 4K ones but some say any content less than 4K can look blurry.

A Dell U2717D was pointed out to me. Hoping to get some suggestions from people on here. Thanks.

I went from 30" 1440p to 31" 2160p (x4096) and for gaming and on-gaming it was absolutely worth it. I run Windows 10 with 150% scaling and I've not noticed any "blurring" for local content except with standard definition sources which will be awful at 1440p also. Most decent applications will scale any content, be it pictures, text or video fine. The smoothness of fonts at 4k is very nice and I can't go back now, not on my primary PC anyway.

The only time I ran into issues with 4k was some clients that required remote access via very old versions of Citrix or convoluted Java wrappers. These wouldn't use the 150% scaling on Windows so everything became ant sized. Fortunately my clients now use the standard Citrix Receiver which scales fine. Although, there is some blurring with this but not horrible.

The Dell U series are quite nice for the price (good warranty cover) and the Infinityedge is cosmetically pleasing. I have 2 of the U2518D models and for general/casual gaming even in FPS games like Destiny seem perfectly fine.

What is the model of your monitor? Guessing it's much more than £400! There's 3 nice 1440p 27" Dell models I've seen between £420 & £480.

Not sure if there's a typo in the first model but I can't find it? Between the U2717D and UP2716D the latter is the superior monitor on paper and would be my choice given the relatively small difference in price. Again, purely on paper the U2717D is an 8bit monitor compared to the 10bit on the UP2716D. If the budget allows and for photo and video editing that would be the winner here.

Yes, that was a typo, should have put 2717. Been looking around today and all I’ve seen is the LG 27UD68P and Acer B276HK which are 4K monitors.

I’ve since found that the newer 69P only has split screen, where the 68P has split screen & picture in picture. It’s either the Dell or the LG, finding it hard to decide. Hopefully ordering my pc tomorrow, so would like to get a monitor for the weekend. Leaning towards the LG as surely 4K would be better for editing full resolution pics.
