Afternoon all,

Can anyone help me with finding a bodybuilding gym in the TW15 area? I can drive, so can go fairly far out, but am really having trouble finding a proper weight lifting gym, which is what I'm interested in.

All the gyms I have found are either incredibly expensive (eg Gold's Gym at £59/m) or have everything, cardio etc.

Cheers,

dirtychinchilla

Weightlifting gym? Or bodybuilding gym? They're quite different activities. ;)

Hah OK, I'm new to this!

What I'm looking for is a gym where it's pretty much all weight training (do they gym rats say for gains and lifts? :p) where there isn't any cardio equipment and I can get some decent advice about lifting etc.

£59/m is not expensive for London! I'd jump at the chance for a better gym than David Lloyd for that price!

I live in SE London near Greenwich so yeah totally the other end of London! :p

There's an AWESOME gym in Putney - but again that's probably too far for you, and it's under £40/m.

However I don't really know your part of the world at all. The best thing to do is go on local bodybuilding forums or TW15 forums and ask around.

Ooh what's this gym in Putney? It's 20 minutes on the train from mine.

Hah £59 is a lot for me, but I'm not looking for all the extra stuff you get for that price.

My ideal gym would have a weights bit, and a pool :p

It doesn't have a pool, but it's a gym where I achieved all sorts of gains.

It's called Physical Culture - http://www.physicalculture.co.uk

Speak to Chris, and tell him I recommended it. Let me know if you ever go there as he's given me a free liftime membership there, and I'll come along (though it takes me a little while to get there!).

Hah I doubt any places have exactly what anyone wants though. It looks good from the pictures...is it the kind of place where they'd give me advice? One thing I never liked about Virgin gyms is that they're so impersonal and don't seem to really care if you achieve anything or not.

If you'd be up for a trip, I'd certainly be up for checking it out! I could always pick you up from somewhere easier for you, also.

The only thing is, I could definitely do with losing some weight first. I believe the right strategy is to get to the right sort of weight, and then worry about getting strong?

Yes they have a couple of people that offer PT stuff, Chris the owner himself offers some PT work but generally the guys there are pretty cool. A few fitness models train there too ;)

I wouldn't need a lift, really but if you go and check it out and you feel it's a place for you then I'd be happy to meet up. :)

I'm not after a personal trainer, but it's a new world to me :) hah I doubt I'd know a fitness model if they slapped me in the face.

Am I right in saying that I should lose weight first? I'm 6ft, 15st and my cardio is pretty bad. I started running this week, and have put myself on about 1800 kcal, so I'm hoping that I'll start losing it soon.

Great, I'm definitely going to think about going and will message you if I do actually go. Maybe we could practice your English :p

The option is there. Diet is key for losing weight, but doing exercise will enhance what your diet is doing - plus, more muscle = more calories burned just being alive, lastly you look better too ;)

A fitness model will give you funny feelings in your loins - you get girls like this:

training around you. It's rather pleasant ;)

Anyway, I digress.

Physical culture has a couple of cardio-specific machines, but it focusses mainly on getting a sweat on by lifting weights - the effort and heart rate needed for lifting weights you will improve cardio vascular health - added to that a couple of short distance (5k) runs a week you'll be well on your way.

I'm planning to try and run as much as you're suggesting, but it's going to take me a while to build up to 5K. I did about 2K last night, but I walked for about 1/3 of it as it was my first run pretty much ever! I felt terrible afterwards, and my calves are still hurting now, but I actually really enjoyed it.

So, it isn't a bad idea to run and do some weights too? Before I think properly about joining a gym, I think I might run on alternative nights, and then do some light weights and pressups on the other nights.

I want to lose weight and bulk up though, so Physical Culture will be on my agenda eventually :)

You used to live in Putney, I'm guessing? Did you go to school around there, then?

Bloody northerner.

Agreed. Get back to your John Smiths!

Ps. I like my women a bit softer with more realistic (although still large) breasts, for future reference :p

haha! :D When a hnnnng gir is bending over in the gym, you lose all standards ;)

I used to live in Puntey yes. No I went to school in France :p But then went to school in SE London when I moved over here. :)

It isn't a bad idea to run (short distances) and do weights. Weights will help you build muscle, strengthen your core and improve the efficiency of your muscles as well as allowing them to recover as they will be used to large dynamic loads. If running 5k in one slog is too much (I don't blame you). Do run / walk intervals. Run for 30 seconds, walk for 30 seconds, run for 30 seconds and so on.

Doing weights, cardio and improving your diet will lean you up nicely - but having a decent amount of muscle mass is actually a healthy way to be - I'm not talking about excessive amounts of muscle like a brute, but a decent amount will actually enhance your life, appetite, posture and also being stronger/faster/more powerful is no bad thing!

Hahaha that may well be true!

Ah I see, damn Frenchie. Putney is nice, some good pubs there!

I would love to be able to run 5K in one slog, and that's my target, even if I run at a snail's pace hah.

Don't worry, I want to have a decent amount of muscle mass. I do have some somewhere, but it's a little hidden! I could definitely improve on it though.
