hi there

im having trouble getting windows installed onto a toshiba laptop.

it copies the setup files accross to the hard disk and then upon reboot it fails to boot to the setup screen where it goes through the screens with the mouse cursor etc and asks for input. Ive formatted the HDD and copied the files but it always takes ages - it hangs on the white bar screen for 5-8 minutes and then says ntfs.sys is corrupted and thats as far as it goes.

ive also tried booting up with puppy linux boot live cd....this was sucessful at first, for three times it booted and i was using it just fine but then unfortunately it failed to boot up half way through booting.

does anyone know how to fix this laptop??

thanks for any help
ben

Hey, sounds like it's not writing to the MBR. I'd suggest low level formatting the drive considering it sounds like it's had some heavy use to get it into a state where it cant even modify those sectors. Next in line if that doesnt work will be to maually nuke the MBR using seatools or the like (depending the drive.) it's probably hitachi or toshiba. they have their own seperate tools

For a comprehensive list of tools that may be able to help, check out Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD)

edit:
actaully finishing reading it, it soudns like the CD rom drive / RAM may be dying, because a linux boot CD doesnt use the harddrive at all.

Would it be possible that the CD-ROM / HDD / RAM are ok but there is a fault with the IDE controller on the motherboard as these are too much a coincidence to be many problems unrelated.

What i would do is after it reboots, go into the bios, change the first boot to the HD and then save and carry on the boot. I have done this myself and it then carries on loading windows!

thanks for the replies guys

the laptop only has one hdd are per usual im afraid.

i changed the boot order in the BIOS many a time without joy.

does anyone know what could be wrong with it? The guy who owns it is getting a second opinion from a computer technician soon so I will see what he says.

Make sure you know if the hard drive is IDE or SATA, then see if you have one spare to test, or borrow one. Swap out ram if possible as well.

its bound to me IDE, because it says so in the BIOS - lets me select IDE or Enhanced IDE (normal) its a toshiba satellite that is three yeasr old running a celeron-m with 512mb of memory.

is there anyway i could test a standard 3.5" hdd out of a desktop computer attaching it to a laptop?

im a noob sorry for it.

No, you can only use 2.5' drives in a laptop.
