Trying to get ADSL modem and Wireless router to play ball

My ADSL connection has been activated today. I already have a Linksys WRT54G router from my old home where I had a cable connection. I have supplemented this by purchasing a Linksys AM200 stand alone ADSL modem. The DSL and Internet lights on the modem have all lit up. However, none of the PCs connected to the router can actually access the internet, and I really have no idea why. I was sort of expecting it to just 'work' after setting up the ADSL modem the other day with all my login details etc.

Any ideas how I can do to get it to work? I don't know where to begin since this is the first ADSL connection I've had!

Thanks,

Michael.

Wow, we have almost the same kit. :) I have that modem but I opted for a WRT54GL because I want to put custom firmware on it.

What's your current setup? DHCP or static IP?

You can run the AM200 in bridged mode, which means it doesn't do any login detail processing, NAT e.t.c but instead acts just like a dumb modem. You can then set up your router to handle that stuff.

EDIT: Here's a detailed guide ---> http://jelnet.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1357

I've tried the 'best in terms of performance' option and it doesn't work. Whenever I try to navigate to any website on one of the networked PCs, the DSL and Internet lights on the Modem go out and the page fails to load. The lights eventually come back on again. The PC will occassionally load Google though, and allow me to navigate around briefly, before the DSL and Internet lights go out.

I'll try the first option.

I've tried the first option and that doesn't work either. I just get no pages loading at all.

My router is also the GL.

Can you access the internet if you attach a PC directly to the modem?
When I had a similar setup I needed a crossover cable between the modem and router. Is the WAN light on the router lit, showing it can see the modem?

With the modem attached directly to a PC, I have more luck browsing sites, but the DSL and internet light still occassionally go off. It seems as if the connection is dropping for some reason. And when the modem is hooked up to the router, this only serves to make it worse, and the connection drops more often. It is also *painfully* slow. I did a speed test and was getting 0.3mbps and 0.4mbps. This is on an 'up to' 8mpbs line.

Does this modem have the ability to act as a transparent bridge with the public IP being assigned to the device behind the modem? e.g. PC/router.

You'd be better getting it all working without the router (i.e. your other thread), before adding another layer of complexity.

And wait until the line / modem connection has stabilised over several days

My last linksys router needed a firmware update and 48 hours of connection attempts with various reboots, it then worked flawlessly.
