Instead of just writing a novel of a first post, I'll try to sum up the situation in as few words as possible lol.

  • I have video sender sending video+audio downstairs as settee downstairs is comfy to watch films on :)
  • Having no problem receiving audio, but video just ain't comin through (and I think films lose their edge when you can't actually see anything)
  • Got a vga to composite video/s-video converter off the bay today, but still no luck getting video through
  • Only just found a way to force tv detection through the annoying nVidia software, but still no luck

So have any of you guys got any ideas how I can get normal TV-friendly signal (as in ye olde CRT, none of this new hi-daf lark) downstairs? I'm willing to try things again if you thing it's worth doing.

VGA converter looks like this:

Link to the first thread I did about this here. That was before I got this converter thingy

Thanks lads

What resolution are you using. Most of these convert only when the output is 800*600 or 1024*768. (TV resolution is 720*576).

Well I have tried dropping the res whilst using that adapter but to no avail, although like energize says it probably doesn't convert the signal. My gfx card does have tv out on it (8800GT), or well what I think is a tv out.

I believe it supports s-video as well as composite and stuff. When I do try to do this, I use an adapter (that came with one of my other video cards) like this so the sender can plug into it.

To be honest I don't think it's a problem with the hardware, I think it's just the nVidia software complicating things. When I did force tv detection I didn't really get that many options which allowed me to change the resolution or anythin like that.

Am I missing somethin out here guys or is there osmehtin I have to do in the nVidia control panel to get it to be ye-olde-tv friendly?

Apart from PAL/NTSC and sharpness there are not many extra options for a TV. The picture will look rubbish anyway, it will just look slightly less rubbish with a bit of tweeking.

So basically is the only way I can get the output through the TV-out is to force the detection of a TV? is there no way I can just make it detect it?

You see when I used that adapter which converted vga to composite, it icked it up as an 'analogue monitor'... so surely it must find somethin when i plug it in through the tv out?

Yep the actual device has to support that VGA converter, most vid cards won't. Have you tried that S Video to composite converter? Start the PC with the TV connected to see if you get the BIOS screen etc. some devices don't detect unless you start the pc with it.

The problem is that you are not actually connecting a TV to your graphics card. A TV will ground the connecting cable so that there will be a voltage difference the graphics card will detect. Obviously your video sender does not ground the cable so you have to force the output.

Aaaah I see now I was wondering why it wasn't detecting it in the first place but now I know. Thanks Bomag.

What I'll do then whenn I get home is I'll force the TV detection (if it doesn't already detect it) and then restart, and see what I get. Tbh I htink it might actually be givin an output but maybe it's just too hi res for the telly.

I'll see what I can do anyhow

Maybe I should have just spent a bit more and got a proper pc-tv spender and not have to go through all this :)
