Hi,

So I've got wake on lan working when I'm connected to the WiFi but can't reliably get it to work away from the house.

I'm using Moonlight streaming (Nvidia Gamestream) and that very occasionally seems to wake the pc but it's not reliable.

I've tried to forward ports on my Virgin Hub 5 but it doesn't seem to be working, tried to forward port 9 to the address of the pc but it doesn't work, checking if port is forwarded on port checking website they always show as blocked.

I hear you have to forward to broadcast address but my router won't let me do this?

Any workaround?

Once the pc is on I can stream to it but of course if I turn it off I can't get it back on

Can you not set up a VPN? Something like wireguard and then initiate the WOL while connected.

That would have been my initial choice of setup.

If my pc is turned off does that mean the VPN would need to be configured on the router ?

I've found a crude way of doing it, set the pc to be set from last state and if I turn pc off via my smart plug when I turn plug back on pc auto power on. But this is by not shutting pc down properly will that cause harm to the pc?

Then you set up a VPN so you can remote desktop to it as if you were on your own network to cleanly shut the pc down first.
Aye so I shut it down well I be able to turn it on will the VPN host be on the desktop therefore not function if PC is off

Correct, if you shut the PC down then the VPN is no longer running and you won't be able to connect. Either set it up on the router, or a low powered device - something like a raspberry pi that can be left on all the time.

Fire tablet be ok? Doubt a virgin hub router would support VPN? I have a bt hub 5 router upstairs that is connected to the virgin router via ethernet. I don't want the virgin router to run in modem mode as the wireless is too good on it.

Could I run the VPN on the bt hub 5 possibly mod it somehow?

Install ZeroTier on your PC and on your phone and use that to connect to shut it down cleanly. Set the BIOS to turn the PC on when AC power is applied, and use the smart plug just to power it back up.

If I set my pc to power on when ac power is applied (good thought wish I thought of it), then I don't need anything else no? As Moonlight Gamestream auto connects and allows me to view desktop.

Or am I missing something?

You may require to run the vpn another way then, router, pi hub, mini pc or something you can keep on all the time.

I have a micro server to do certain functions like this, I turn my devices on/off by power plugs.

I've found a FRITZIBOx 3490 under a table are they any good to use as a VPN? Could replace the bt hub 5 with it

I don't, perhaps it's a worthy investment, could I use it as a VPN to tunnel in and could I use it at the same time as ultra fast "tv stick"?

I have a 3 year sub to PIA Internet I don't know if I can use that or if I'd put that on the Pie?
