I recently purchased a pc second hand and tho booklet I received for the MOBO said it was the MSI790GX however from doing a fair bit of research I think there are a few varients on this board and I'n not sure which one I have.

I currently have 8gigs of ddr2 memory in there and wanted to know if the board supports ddr3 and if it does what would the real world benefits be of ddr3 as opposed to ddr2 memory.

thanks

take a good hard look at the board, and compare it with the pics on msi website?
if it has ddr2, then it will be socket AM2+, and will not work with ddr3

find out your motherboards manufacturer (eg, gigabyte, asus etc), and go to their website. find your motherboard name, and look for it. there should be some kind of link to download drivers

Whatever CPU-Z says it is, it is.

Using the manufacterers website support page is your best bet.
