Trying to install new GPU

Hello all,

I have decided to treat myself and finally buy a GPU for my PC. Never been a big gamer and integrated video card was enough to satisfy my needs, but time has come... After careful consideration I have bought myself geforce gtx 1050 ti. Now, after installing it the PC goes into continuous reboot, not even loading past bios. At certain loads i was getting a tripple beep as well (instead of just one on loading), but still black screen and back to reboot.

Here is what I am playing with:

~5 year old rig

Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H Motherboard
Intel i3 3225
Corsair CX430 Watt 80 PLUS Bronze Power supply unit

Rest I believe is irrelevant for the matter..

Obviously, as mentioned above, GPU is GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GD

A bit of googling of continuous loop of restarting indicates incompability of motherboard and GPU ... but pretty certain this is not my case. Another potential issue is PSU .. used some power calculators and they indicated that this should be sufficient in my case.

help? :)

Oh, probably worth adding that taking GPU out and PC starts without any issues as always... so it's got to be compatibility/PSU issue?!?!

Okaaay.. Googling showed that I do have outdated version of bios and best way to update it apparently using @BIOS app from gigabyte website.

Outcome of what seemed to be fairly successful update is Windows cannot load and suggesting me to go through startup repair. It could not successfully repair though.. Kicking me either out or 'send info to Microsoft' (that's gonna help!) and giving me program signature.

I do see a new bios screen upon loading, then 1-2 second of windows loading and then BSOD for a split second and into restart.

Seems like Windows reinstall is what I need to do now... Will play with it tomorrow a bit and, if unsuccessfull, will reinstall windows I guess..

Thanks all! Seems like right direction, although I enjoyed 6 year old Windows that was working like a charm... :)

Update: more googling and changing booting method from IDE to AHCI helped to load the system... yay! Bios version is also F22, which seems to be the latest one.

Now, if I put GPU in then we are not in a cycle of reboots, but just black screen without any movements.. nothing is loading, nothing is happening. Just a quiet fan noise.... lol. Taking GPU out works fine - i am now editing this reply from Windows which loaded just fine.

Thanks for all the help and any further ideas are welcome. Bed time now though, will be picking this up tomorrow.

Have you disabled onboard graphics in the bios ?
Check in the bios which pcie slot its using, I usually set this to auto.
Where did you get the GPU from, can you try it in another pc ?
It could be faulty.

Agree with comment about going into bios to disable on board graphics my old computer would black screen because it didn't automatically pick up my new graphics card and it was easy fixed by entering the bios and disabling on board graphics.

Daft question but you are plugging the monitor cable into the GPU, aren't you? ;)

If it is plugged into the motherboard, surely the GPU will disable onboard graphics and you will get a black screen.

Yeah, i have done that mistake before when i build PC for my nephew :) :) Actually I had signal from both onboard graphic card and separate GPU when i was swapping HDMI between (with different quality obviously). Currently i'm not even hearing the usual loading noise from PC, not even signal to monitor at very initial loading stage (monitor light blinking as if PC is off).

At work currently, so will try the disabling in bios later on today...

Got GPU from amazon, bought it new and obviously can return/exchange it .. If i dont get much luck tonight, then will test GPU tomorrow at different PC somewhere to see if it's loading.

Thanks for all the ideas and help!

I'll follow this with interest, ironically same board, same new GFX, same issue, not done the bios yet as I took it into work this morning thinking I'd do a quick cleanout and swap it over, never simple!

Latest none beta bios on Gigabyte's site is 2014!

Haha I made this same mistake with my recently used GPU purchase.

Had my monitor plugged into my mobo as I sold my old card and was waiting for my purchase to arrive.

Plugged it in and obviously it "wasn't working" so I was ****** and blinding all over the place about being ripped off. :D

Another potentially daft question, does the GPU require any dedicated power from the PSU? I know a lot of the 1050 series don't, but ones with more elaborate coolers/overclocking focused might do.

I've started to have a similar issue to this with a newer build, everything working fine before installing my rtx 2080.
From a cold boot when the pc has been off over night everything spins up and seems OK but monitor displays a black screen, I have to go through recovery and launch windows that way. A restart of the pc after this and all seems fine. I've reseated everything and made sure everything is updated.
I've ordered a new Psu so will see if it's just the psu dying.

I would never update BIOS using proprietary software from the vendors. Pop the new bios file on to a USB, plug the usb into the back of the PC and follow instructions to flash in the BIOS.

I imagine it was a BIOS version issue, but the flashing of BIOS from windows has corrupted your windows install.

Format and reinstall windows should fix.

It's a simple as if it has a power port on it, it will need dedicated power from the PSU. If it doesn't, it won't. At least, I've never seen a situation where it was different.

Definitely, but people can miss this. I've seen instances where people have wanted a slot powered card, and picked a GPU based on that, but then picked a version which needs power. OP doesn't specify the exact model so we can't be sure.

Sorry I'm an idiot for some reason I thought you were asking that question as if you didn't know the answer :D, not that you were directing further troubleshooting

Mate of mine has the same board, his 6850 died so I got him a new card off of MM it was a rx470 and I had nothing but issues with similar problems, when we finally got it working all sound from the board disappeared. Literally nothing I did would make it work. In the end I had to just get him a soundcard as well, tbh the board imo is total junk.

Okay everyone, i got it running!

While still at work I read the above couple comments around power to GPU ... was confident that i don't have one, as I did check .. however... inspected the card one more time and found power sockets in one of the corners. was very smartly done in the corner that I have missed it last time.

I also went into bios and completely disabled integrated video card. After restart I had to manually press restart button on PC for some reason and it did not start straight away... not sure what's the reason ... but after 1-2 manual restarts it started.

So not so confident what exactly worked to get it running, since it was automatic use of integrated card... so in my head PC should have loaded even with GPU not plugged to supply? Clearly not the case.

Oh well, thank you very much everyone (specially the 'daft' questions, as they definitely helped :) ). drivers installed, couple restarts, dont see any issues. want to stress test it to see what's what as well, but seems working fine.

As for the comment about board, had no issues in 5 years of use and it seems that everything worked fine in this case as well. User was the problem :)
