Writing this on my phone for obvious reasons (including lack of forethought) -

I'm a little stumped by the power sockets, it has 1x6 pin and 2x 8 pin..
My PC has 4 6 pin power cables available (from my old xfired cards).

The instructions with the card are very minimalist,
So I'm not clear what I should /shouldn't do.

The new card does have one 6pin to 8pin cable converter.

This means that I could plug in one native 6 pin cable and one that is modified to 8 pin with the converter.

Would this be okay...? *gulp*

Oh it's a little more complicated, 2 of the 6pin cables from the PSU have an extra 2 pins tied back. Presumably I can plug these into the 8 pin slots and put one of the 6 pin cables in the other slot. I guess my main concern is I don't want to plug too much into the card! As long as that isn't possible I'm ok. I'm also unclear as to what the minium cable requirement for the card is.

Just fill every socket. You can't plug in "too much".
Though I've heard for normal use you only need the two 8 pins.

Just fill all of them...the PCI-E 6 pin socket with the 6 pin cable, and the two 8 pins with the two 6+2 pin PCI-E cables.

Standard 290x only require one PCI-E 6 pin and one PCI-E 8 pin, the Lightning however and extra 8 pin for people that want more voltage/watts for playing around with extreme overclock.
