I'm installing Vista on a new drive. I boot it from disk during start up, and it goes swell for most of the part, then, it restarts, and goes back to the installation, and continues, all during the "completing installation" part. Then, about 74% across the bar, it restarts, but it doesn't tell me this time, like it did before with the count down, it just restarts, my PC gets back to the safe mode window, and when I go into start normally, it says that there was some kind of error during installation, and I had to go back and do it again. The first time I installed it, the screen just remained black after the restart, went past the boot up stuff, but the installation screen never appeared, so I had to restart. What could it be?

Can you download a boot disk and run some hard disc utilities to check drive fitness of the hdd?
usually one of three things, hdd issues, dvd rom is scratched or memory issues (assuming your pc is at least minimum spec)

hard drive is brand new, disk is perfect looking, eveything else is practically brand new too, and more than enough for vista..

can you get hold of a spare drive, say a 40gb or something and try it to prove out the hard drive, not going to patronise you but new kit isnt always perfect.

damn, I don't have any more sata2 drives.. I have one other sata2 hard drive, but that is what I'm using now, and it has all of my stuff and XP OS on it, I don't want to use it, cause if I hate vista, I can just plug back into my old one which works perfectly, and format the vista one..

I have had problems on 1 machine i tried installing vista on with a 7 series card, cant remember which model exactly but i can find out,

To get installation to complete we had to use the onboard gfx which also happend to be nvidia (6series though), once it booted we installed the new nvidia drivers put the card back in and weyhey away we went.

I think its a conflict with that specific card and the drivers that come with vista,

*IF* this is the same problem i would suggest trying out another card to get installation to complete

Installed XP on the HD in question, and it worked fine, so then I formatted it, set defaults in bios, and tried again with Vista, same problem though..

Oh, okay, done. I'm didn't realise this was a tea party with the queen, I thought it was a computer forum. Anyway, I still can't do this install, 4th time, no luck, tried with 3 different graphics cards... Don't have any PCI or any other thing on the board, just 3gb mem, a c2d, and a gtx7900. Would where I set the jumper on the HD matter?

not really as its getting most of the way through. Is this a legit copy? if it is you cold take it back tomorrow for an exchange.

yeah legit, but net bought, so taking it back would take time.. I don't know what else to try. Hmmm. I've just had a clever idea. I have another PC here with bad HD and no gfx, it has onboard, but... It has vista certified compatible on it, so swap HD and install, then chuck it on my PC.

I've had a problem with freezes/restarts during the installation. It turned out to be the RAM. Cut your RAM right back to 1 stick, and try again.

Well, I didn't do that, but I did what I said I would, and it worked.. However, I haven't yet used it through my PC, leaving that until tomorrow.. 2 things I like about it so far: chess, and it's appearance. Will have to play more with it tomorrow.

Just checked this in my PC, and it gets to the loading bar, then I see a tiny blue screen of death for about .5 of a second, then it restarts, same thing happens again. Hmm... I can't believe this works on a piece of junk machine, and it doesn't work on mine.. I tried the upgrade adviser, it says my PC is perfectly fine.. I really don't get it. I tried with just 1 stick of memory, no change.. Can't figure it out.. It's got to be something simple.. My board is even vista certified.
