as the title shows, i am currently running 2 synology nas boxes

DS918+ (4bay)
DS920+ (4bay)
(all 10tb Iron wolf drives and both systems in raid 5)

im unable to add to this current setup to due power socket limatations so idealy id like to get ride of the 2 boxes and just have 1 system.

im looking to try and put all this into a case that can house around 12 to 15 drives, maybe a fractul xl size case. or rack mounted case.?

i only need it to be able to run a maximun of 2 streams at one time idealy 4k streams.

im just having some trouble part picking to make something due to not really knowing wether to go for ecc or non ecc systems.

i remember watching linus do a build here and i looked into all the parts for this but was still unsure about the memory and cpu at the time. but now seeing this is out of date is there any other reccomendation that are cheap enough for a novice to build for under £1000 (not including drives)

any help would be much appriciated in a pc part list or directional paths ect.

I'm half looking at doing very similar at the moment, just mulling up options - the fractal xl case does seem pretty darn good.

I'm mulling between the DS1823xs+ and a DIY fractal xl.

With the former, you could get yourself to 18 bays by adding a couple of DX517s to it (you might be able to use the larger bay expansion units for even more)

Some good thoughts from folks here:

The Silverstone SST-CS380 v2 can house 8 drives plus another two from converting the 5-1/4 bays.

The big question is if to go with ECC RAM as that dictates the price and defines the rest of the hardware to a large extent.
