Trying to set up vive and vega 56

This might sound daft but what am I doing wrong?

I've a vega 56 connected to my monitor via HDMI cable. The vega card has only 1 HDMI slot so when I have to attach the Vive's HDMI to the card, I have to take out the monitor hdmi cable. Then I can't see what happens as monitor is off. What am I doing wrong here?

Do I need HDMI cable and a displayport (hdmi from vive and displayport from card to monitor)??

I've never used a displayport, any "type" I need to get? Or are they all the same
