Trying to start the 214's engine...

hi,

I'm trying to start up the engine on the 214 to see if its a runner, because i've got someone interested in it.

Now, i've charged the battery fully. The engine turns over about half a turn and then stops. I can hear the fuel pump priming.

Any ideas? Could it be seized?
 
Sounds like MM syndrome :p Pretty sure andy had it not start on him a few times, and im pretty sure he will have an answer for you.

If its only turning half a turn though it sounds either like the battery isn't providing the starter with enough juice, or the starter is shafted.
 
Any other nasty noises?

Can you continually turn it over half a turn each click of the key, or does it just shunt nastily once then cease to play for a bit?

Could be hydraulically locking if waters got into it?

Need more info :D

I know the battery is good, as Its only just come off charge, and it was perfect before.

every time i turn the key, it turns over. I can do that for ages - it just doesn't want to turn any more :(

That was the CTS. The engine would turn over fine, just not fire until you welded your foot to the floor.

I changed the CTS about 2 weeks before I picked up the GSi. Yeah that's right, it took me 10 months to get round to changing it, and when I do I go and sell it :o

Westy's problem sounds totally different though. It's as if the engine is locking up. Westy, whip the plugs out and turn the engine over by hand (socket and bar on the crank pulley bolt). You'll need to take the drivers side wheel off to get to it.

edit... After re-reading the above post... so it turns over for ages and ages but won't fire?

It turns over for about half a turn - hardly any at all. Then it stops.

Lashout - yep, everything's still in place.
 
Hmmm, weird one this.

Does it turn over quickly or rather slowly?

Battery could have become damaged being stood upside down. Does anything tick when it stops turning?

Like I said, try turning it over by hand :)
 
I'd drop all the plugs out, see if that makes any difference - maybe you dislodged something in the camtrain (although it seems unlikely) in the crash -dropped a valve or somesuch.

But yea, drop the plugs and see what happens then.

well the engine was sat upside down for a good 15 mins..

it turns over at the same speed as it would normally - but something stops it.

Fuel cut off wouldn't cause the engine to seize like this though.

Westy, give the starter a few taps with a hammer... just in case.

Try to put the car in gear and start it. See if it still gets stuck. Worth a try.

Oh, try bump starting it too :)

Btw, the fuel cutoff is behind the centre console... drivers side.
 
Don't bump start it, if it is hydraulicly locked you will break the engine in a terminal manner. The inlet manifold gaskets can leak coolant into the inlet ports, take the spark plugs out and turn it over as suggested.

Its almost a brand new battery. It ran perfectly before the crash, with the same battery.
