Hi, so I haven't even got a gaming rig (I'm using a laptop) but after saving up for a few years I have a budget of £1200 max to build an ITX which will have to include the peripherals such as monitor etc. Thanks for helping a PC noob such as myself out. :'(

Gonna list what I have so far and a couple of questions for each section. o_o

* BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Cube Case
* Intel Core i5 4670K 3.4GHz Haswell Quad Core CPU - or -
Intel Core i7 4770K 3.5GHz Haswell Hyperthreaded Quad Core CPU (+£60)

(So from my limited knowledge I assume if I'm only planning on single GTX card which I am then there's no point on getting an i7 and the difference between the two is so minimal that I can safely go with the i5?)

* Intel Stock Cooler

(Is this gonna be enough for because being in such a small case I have concerns)

* MSI Z87I Intel Z87 Mini ITX Motherboard - or -
Asus Z87I Professional Intel Z87 Mini ITX Motherboard (+£22.50)

(I've watched youtube reviews on both, the tech jargon stuff went over my head so I'm not sure what the difference really is between these :( )

* Corsair Vengeance Pro Silver 16GB (2x8GB) 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit

(No other 16G ram available in the config and 8GB isn't enough for me)

* Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 Windforce 3x OC 2048MB GDDR5 Graphics Card
* Samsung 840 Evo Series 250GB Solid State Drive
* 1TB Seagate 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache Hard Drive
* OcUK 24x DVD+RW SATA ReWriter Drive
* Corsair CX 600W V2 "80 Plus Bronze" Rated Power Supply

(600W is the highest the system config offers, is this gonna be enough? The Nvidia website states 600W is the minimum power requirement for a GTX770 so I feel this is a bit iffy)

* Noiseblocker Blacksilent Pro 120mm PWM Fan

Subtotal £1,230.80
£1,025.67 ex VAT

**** I'm already over-budget and I haven't even bought a monitor or anything yet. Orz ;_; help! Perhaps I should wait until the 800s release so prices go down? D:

Yeah it's for gaming, but I find when doing the randoms stuff on my laptop 8 GB isn't enough some times, still I would be saving £68.33 so yeah I should maybe. Think the prices will drop when DDR4 comes out?

If I also forgo the 1TB HDD I also cut back another £34.

8gb is plenty, no worries there.

You can drop the SSD down to a 120gb model to save yourself a bit more. Playing with the configurator, I'm at £1078 for a 4670k/770 build, without peripherals.

The stock cooler is fine until you start overclocking the CPU. Is that something you would want to do? (You could always stick with the stock cooler for now, then add an aftermarket one later)

Don't suppose you'd like to try building this yourself? You'd get more for your money.

EDIT: A 600w PSU will power that spec easily. Although the extra £10 for the more efficient, quieter Corsair RM 550w is well worth it.

I agree with the above, 8GB of RAM is plenty for gaming especially given the current high prices. A 600W PSU should also be plent for a 770, you could probably even use a good quality 500W but it wiouldn't save you any money.

Realistically on that kind of budget you're going to have to make some further compromises so I've droped some of the extra options down, notably the CPU but this should make negligable difference in most games.

That includes monitor, headphones, Windows 7 OEM, keyboard and mouse. You might consider reducing the SSD to 128GB though.

If you are prepared to build it yourself (it's like adult LEGO really) you could save more money and have more options. For the budget gamer an AMD system is really worth considering but OcUK don't offer an AMD ITX pre-built.

How much money would I realistically be saving if I build myself as oppose to them doing it for me? I feel like I'd break something putting it together myself. Minus the mouse as I got a mouse ATM. Probably gonna go with a 22" which would cut maybe 10-20. How necessary is the gaming headset? I've never used one before. o_o Thanks for the help so far.

True, but the Prodigy is not very small and fairly easy to build in I believe. Here is a roughly equivalent AMD spec:

1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £149.99

1 x Asus 24x DVD±RW DRW-24F1ST SATA ReWriter - Black (Retail) £19.99
1 x BitFenix Spectre 120mm Fan - White £5.99
Total : £1,147.14 (includes shipping : £24.45).

This could probably do with double-checking but I think I've got it right. There is also some lee-way here on component selection but I've tried to keep is close to the system config build.

If you replaced the AMD processor and mobo with an i5-4430 and the cheapest ITX mobo it works out as £10 more and wouldn't be as good (no wifi, lower performance, no overclocking).

And personally I would be very reluctant to compromise on the monitor. 24inch is the minimum for a gaming PC IMO.

Interesting. I'm gonna go read some material on motherboards again but can you explain the difference between the MSI Z87I Intel Z87 Mini ITX Motherboard and the Asus Z87I Professional Intel Z87 Mini ITX Motherboard so a dumb guy can understand? :D :confused:

Don't bother with an AMD ITX system - there are no good ITX boards for their decent processors, so you're stuck with their APU range.

Here's a self-build spec at the top end of the budget. It is mATX, but the case is the same size as a Prodigy ITX. As you can see, you've got a 290 in there which is much more powerful than a 770.

2 x Enermax Cluster UCCL12 120mm Fan £9.98 (£19.96)

That is a great little system - much better than you could do with the configurator. Putting it all together is relatively straight forward. There are plenty of build guides out there - look up Newegg's How to Build a Computer series on Youtube.

Or a 770 spec with a cheaper motherboard:

I've still gone for the overclockable 4670k in both specs - as it is on offer you don't save much with a locked chip.

Question ... is there much point in a Z mobo and K cpu? Are you going to overclock? If so, then stock cooler isn't going to hack it

If not, buy a non-K cpu and a H87 mobo. You'll save yourself about 40-50 there i think

MSI Nightblade specs released. If it works out cheaper getting barebones. Shame case is fairly large.
