I'd normally say Vidahost, but they're very much a Linux company, so in this case TSOhost will be the more experienced player. They're both hosted on good infrastructure, so you should find them both reliable.
As for keeping domain and hosting separate, the reason for that is that if you want to move, some companies will try to hang on to your domain with onerous transfer-out conditions and/or charges. Watch out for this - they may headline cheap/free domains but there might just be a catch if you ever dare to leave. I've been burned.
There are 'good guys' out there who either don't do this, or make clear up front what they do do. Recouping costs is fair enough, but excessive lock-in clauses are not.
