so yeah...im thinking of going lanbox style due to it being small n compact n it would be nice for something new :D
i own a 8800GTS n have seen people putting these in em so im not worried about that

but i am worried about temps, im currently using a scythe infinity on my c2d E6600 n im getting about 40 ( ive reseated it a number of times but never changed the temps), i realise this is a little high but im not worried as in games etc it only goes up by about 5 so its still kind of cool lol

but yeh...has anyone got any links to people who have got this box n posted temps etc??
im obv guna be getting a new mobo which would be the Abit Fatal1ty F-I90HD, but would anyone recommend a nice cooler to go with this build too?? obv my infinity wont fit :P

uhm....just realised you guys have a SFF thingy so this is posted in wrong area, could an admin move it please?

Hey.

I see you've taken an interest in the Lanbox. Well, that's okay, but if you're looking to build a SFF gaming machine then there are better cases out there that do the same job and (IMO) look far less cheesy! :p ;)

The biggest problem facing a SFF user, and one that drives temperatures up, is that you can't use most of the coolers that full ATX users can. Stuff like the Scythe Ninja, Tuniq Tower, and Thermalright Ultra 120 simply will not fit.

That doesn't mean it's impossible to get a well cooled SFF rig, it just means you have to be careful what you choose.

Here are my recommendations.

Motherboard - I'd steer clear of the F-I90HD. It's a nice board, however there are better for the same money. The Asus P5K-VM and Gigabyte G33M-DS2R sport the new G33 chipset, which supports the new Intel 45nm CPUs due later this year. They also overclock far better than the Abit.

CPU - If you have the money, you could pick up something like a Q6600, or if not, then just transfer your E6600 over into the new system. It's still a damn fast processor, and would easily power an 8800GTS at stock - but there's little stopping you adding a modest overclock, maybe to 3.2GHz?

RAM - Simple really. If you don't want to overclock at all, then 2GB or 4GB of the cheapest value RAM you can find would suffice. If you do want to overclock, then it may be worth spending a little more on the RAM, but don't go overboard as you're unlikely to get really sick overclocking levels, due to heat.

Graphics Card - I see you've picked the 8800GTS, and that's a good choice. However there are things to consider here. For example, the HD2900XT. It IS faster than the GTS, but consumes more power, and is a hotter card. Either way, it's worth considering. I have one in my SFF rig, and I don't have any noise issues, or trouble cooling it. And, two weeks from now, the HD2900 Pro launches. Nothing's concrete yet, but it appears these could be the same 2900XT, but lowered clocks.

Cooling - Here you have to be careful. With SFF often you're given a limit on the height of the cooler. This is what you have to consider. I use the Zalman CNPS8000, others use coolers like the NT06 (which is passive but works very well), and i've also seen the Zalman CNPS8700 used as well (120mm fan).

Case - The most popular models are the Silverstone Sugo SG01 Evolution, Sugo SG03, the Lian-Li V300, and the Aspire X-QPack. Personally I think the Silverstone and Lian-Li cases offer better cooling than the QPack, the Lian-Li being the best of the bunch. The Sugos both have good cooling though, and (IMO) are the pick of the lot overall.

The rest of the components are down to you, bits like the HDD, Optical Drive etc. but make sure you get a PSU which can power everything in the case. The good thing is that you can choose from the range of ATX PSUs, but nothing huge like 800W+.

It's a long read, but I think that covers it really. :)

well my rig is as follows:

8800GTS 320
2GIg of Geil
asus p5b (suqs i no)
250GB wd + 160GB wd
c2d E6600

the only thing i can see needing to swap to a SFF is a new motherboard i wa checking out the gigabyte you posted think you may have changed me on the motherboard :D, i use a modular hiper 580W right now im probs guna get a new one at a later stage but i dont know yet...

i was looking at the sugo's by ss but i like the "handle" kind of thing on the lanbox, the aspire im not too fond of tbh idk why

basicly i want one to be a little portable but be my main machine aswell, i sometimes take my pc to my friends n play some css with them etc n im sick of lugging my tt shark around lol
by switching to a sff will my temps go insainly high or a little higher?
i plan on going quad when the new ones get released later this year till then im sticking

as for cpu cooling i was thinking of the blue orb but my friend told me to stay away from it but im not sure but i am quite intrested in the Zalman CNPS8000 you use ;) though i was loking at the NT06 but i was checking out a pic, would the fan on my psu suck the heat kind of thing if i had this?? im only asking due to no fan being on tom of it but it being right under a psu in the pic i c

You can get a separate carry bag designed for the Sugo, I have one and it's a superb little package, has slots and compartments for keyboard, mouse, cables, etc. so I personally think it's a better choice than the lanbox.

Any of the coolers you've suggested would be fine, just watch as I said above for the height of the cooler, and also when using the SG01, be careful when using a cooler with a 120mm fan as some don't quite fit - they overhang the motherboard enough to stop the case from being closed properly.

ive seen so many things on the sg01b i think it may have won me over :D
ty tute :)
think i might go with the one with the windows on the sides ofc :)
