Was stopped at some lights on a local road here. Had my elbow on the door and hand on my ear, so i guess it might have looked like i was on the phone. Van behind me turned out to be a police van and immediately the blues started flashing for me to pull over somewhere. I did this, and the first thing the copper goes to me is "you know why we stopped you?, we saw you on the phone talking!" I immediately denied this, but they constantly backed each other up saying they even saw the light from the phone screen! There was talk of 3 points, dangerous driving etc.. when something dawned on me, i DID NOT have my phone on me! it was home on the table as i just nipped out to go to Tesco for some late shopping and snacks etc..

I informed them that i did not have my phone! They could search me, search the car and rip it apart if they wished it'd turn up empty! They then changed the tune to it being a sat nav or something, no luck there its at my mates house as hes picking someone up in South Hampton tomorrow! :D And why would i need a satnav to go to Tescos 1/4 mile away from where i've lived for 11yrs?? Eventually, after a complimentry breath test (just to rub it in i guess? I was obviously dead sober) i got a "ok mate, have a good night, consider it your lucky day".

I mean wtf? it would seem my goose would have been cooked if i did indeed have a phone, regardless if i was using it or not or had it in my hand etc.. Is this how justice is meted out these days? They try it on and hope for a result even if you're innocent? Not liking police even more now.

Your phone records could have proved if you had been using it.

And as for that lucky day quip, I would have told them lucks got nothing to do with it as I walked of.

you could have proven you werent using the phone from your providers logs.

worked for that harriet harman or whatever her name was when she had an accident but it was okay! because she wasnt on the phone at the time but a few minutes earlier.

I'd have told them to "get ****ing stuffed" when they told me it's my lucky day.

The police round here are complete ***** when it comes to driving. They all think turning lights aren't allowed, at least one of them thinks only Volvos are allowed daylight running lights.

They're pretty bad at police work too, my sister had her purse pickpocketed, some distance later the thieves spotted a police then van, threw the purse in the road and legged it. The idiots in the van didn't comprehend that crime was going on right in front of their faces and just drove past. Luckily a pedestrian saw what was going on and picked it up, with all the money still in it.

Sometimes I'm tempted to become a police officer, just to bring the total IQ of police in my area above 100.

Yeah, that's about right.

You won't get much in the way of actual attempts to improve road safety by the plod, it's just a case of how much money they can make out of the motorist.

A bigger problem is they don't know who their friends are.

Dad has seen one local jobsworth checking the equipment on a garage's recovery truck (there's a requirement for what the ones on the police rota must carry). The truck was short of a lot of things, fortunately one of the few intelligent officers was with him, and in no uncertain terms told the younger officer not to **** off the recovery truck drivers.

ROFL, yes, that would have been bad ass.

Or you could have asked for their police badge numbers and told them that for lying about having seen me on my phone including the screen display and wasting not only my time, but valuable police resources, you would be reporting them to their commander.

I had this a couple of years ago, I've posted about it before.
Asshat plod pulls me over after a check point and asks if he knew why I was being pulled over, I said no, I'd have to be pretty stupid to doing something going through your checkpoint back there and I certainly wasnt speeding as I made sure I was only doing 45 ( I was in a van) as soon as I clocked you all.
He then says, Its because you were on a mobile phone.
I said I doubt you did, as its been in my bag all morning flat as a pancake because I forgot to put it on charge the night before, and the mobile company would gladly furnish me with the details of the last time it was used. No, I wont be giving you my name or address. He then goes on to say that he will have to arrest me If I wont give him my details, to which I replied fine, do what you like, I'll gladly waste your whole day If thats all this is about.
I then got told he would be checking the video feed in his car, but that he suspected he wouldnt find anything, and that I would have the threat of a court appearance hanging over me for the next 6 months.
Yeah, have a nice day yourself, thanks for wasting half hour of life with your bull****.

You can blame the law on mobile phone usage I guess, it's so woolly that you can be found guilty just holding a phone (or a device capable of telephony).*

* Unless you're Jimmy Carr

A freind of mine has worked for the police in ops/control and also the CJU for years.

We had a similar incident a few years ago, where we were stopped and virtually interrogated by a pair of officers who seemed keen to pin almost anything they could on us.
My freind quietly made a note of their numbers and reported it (unoffically) to the Chief Inspector the following day in work. He went bonkers to be frank. They are aware of officers like this and they want rid - in the words of the CI "********* like that make mine and everyone elses job far more difficult than it should be" - I think he said something about it undoing all the work senior coppers do to promote good police image, working with the community etc.

I would make a complaint. If you did have the phone with you in your pocket/in the car you would have 3 points now.

The fact that you left your phone at home was the only reason they didn't get away with making false accusations.

Totally agree with you there nick.

I'd go as far as I could on this just to make a point. Probably a few quid selling this to the daily mail/ the sun.

Without doubt these total liars should be suspended and previous charges investigated. The said they saw a light from a phone. They clearly lied.

I had a very similar experience on Oct last year. I got pulled by a police car that as I passed them was facing the opposite direction and a major set of traffic lights. There were two young lads and an older female driver. The younger guys spoke to me first after following me for about a mile or so and stated you were seen on the phone as you passed us at the traffic lights back there. I said I had made a call to my mum on the car kit but it only lasted for four words because I ended it when I saw them behind me and I wasn't on the phone when I initially passed them. I offered to show them the call register on idrive to prove it(also proving I dont need to hold the phone either). She got out the car and was adamant that they had all seen me holding the phone as I drove past them, the young guys didnt talk after that. We had a pretty heated 20 minutes after that were I was trying to explain how even if I was on the phone the car has the phone built in and just come and look at it and see. She was having non of it and saying I don't care what the car has built in we saw you operating a mobile phone. It was like a stalemate she wasn't going to let me prove I wasnt holding a phone and I wasnt giving in. She then came out with a smart arse comment about how come the phones in your pocket and not in the cradle if the car does it all to which i replied it connects via bluetooth and the cradle only connects the aeriel and charges it. In the end she finished it with even if the car does have all the phone built in its not advisable to talk while driving as it can distract you. I wasnt even on the phone as I passed them and I have no doubt that she would have knicked me if I didnt have the car screen to prove them wrong.

It looked to me like the two guys were new and she was trying to show off at my expense. I put an official police complaint in and had a reply from the Police complaints commission to say it had been passed on to the met(they had followed me and pulled me in Surrey polices area). I have yet to get any feedback form the Met police.

I have always wondered this when doing the same thing. It may look like you are on the phone and how could you prove you weren't?

Also, why would you be holding your sat nav to your ear?

She said to me that its an offence to use or operate any hand held device while operating a motor vehicle from mobile phones, satnavs to pdas. Which i'm not sure is right anyway because about a week after I was pulled Jimmy Carr was in the news and had got off using a mobile phone while driving because he was using it as a dictaphone and not actually communicating with anyone.

Surely using your dick to phone is more dangerous that using your hands? :D

I'll get my coat...
