How long has the tuna been dead before it hits the store shelves in a tin? Is it days? weeks? months?

How much healthier is fresh tuna than tinned tuna?

How about frozen tuna steaks then? How are they for Omega 3?

Also, how much of a concern is mercury in tuna? Just how much would you need to eat (a week) to build up dangerous levels?

fresh tuna is much healthier, the tinning process destroys things like the omega 3

Actually it doesn't matter that much, the levels of omega 3 change more based on the water temperature and the season they were caught in.

Yuk. think about how damaging tuna fishing is to the environment.

Shame on you!!

I like the newer tins of tuna with a little oil added. chillie+mayonaisse=lush.

TangoSixteen with another wild unsubstantiated comment!

If you buy tuna that is 'dolphin friendly' which I believe is the case for every bit of tuna whether fresh or canned in UK supermarkets then you aren't doing anything wrong.

There are some restaurants in the UK which serve Blue Fin Tuna, sourced from Japanese waters... Nobo came under particular fire because it does. Otherwise, it's not different to the enivormental effect of eating any other type of fish.

Tuna, canned is still a very healthy and protein rich food to eat, the Omega 3 is reduced, but not totally destroyed. Canned food lasts a long time, though fresh is great and obviously tastes wonderful but is expensive.

In a day i have 1 tin of Tuna and 1 tin of Sardines in Tomato Sauce, and that's 6 days a week!

I know this has no baring on the thread, I just wanted to type something....

??? Its a tin of fish caught and packaged within about 24 hours, so its pretty fresh.

After that whats the shelf life of a tin ?? 2 years, much much longer ten years??

ofc a fresh fish will be fresher(lol)
