Can't do a reinstall just yet, but want to sort out a quickish fix for a friend, what tools could i use? got to be free btw.

Spyware - Ad-Aware/Malwarebytes/Spybot S&D
System Optimiser/Registry Cleaner - CCleaner

I'd also run Disk Cleanup and Defrag.

Try Super Antispyware as well There is a free edition and I have found it is very good.

disable system restore
ccleaner
nod32 av trial (for a one time scan)
spybot s&d
o&o defrag trial (will work wonders)

also, startup lite http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php
^prevents crap like quicktime, google plugins and unneeded driver tools from loading up

Having a problem with a rundll32 file not working on startup, any ideas?

Start>Run>sfc /scannow It may ask for the windows cd if it needs to replace anything.
