Ive had a older version of this installed on my laptop and im just wondering if its worth updateing to the newest verion or just uninstall it completely?
It seems to get mixed reviews using this type of software,

i mainly use it to stop programs running when i start up windows it there a good program that i can use to also do this? had a look on ccleaner and this seems to do the same things?

You can use "msconfig" (just type that in a Run box and press Enter) to stop things running when Windows starts. I doubt that a "tune up" utility will be good for anything else, so I say "uninstall it".

as above, also i am not keen on so called 'registry' cleaners.

I use the startup tool in CCleaner to manage startup items.

I also use Revo uninstaller, that removes the program and also any registry items left over, that the windows add/remove program misses.

TuneUp is a pain in the bum now, I ditched it some time ago and started using WinUtilities instead which does a similar job. I use CCleaner and WinUtilities to remove registry entries left behind by software uninstalls and I use CCleaner to remove startup entries too.

I must be the only one who likes Tune Up, I like the registry cleaner/defragger, like the ability to remove large files (show top 100 files) and it's nice to recover the 5GB used by Windows Update backups.

However, I can't say I've really noticed any sort of speed increase, it gives you options to slim down the OS (Turbo and Economy modes) but you could probably achieve the same just by turning off all the Aero stuff in Windows anyways

Even msconfig is a bit dodgy for stopping processes from starting up. Better to remove the program completely if you don't want anything to do with it.

The problem for TuneUp is that theres a bunch of excellent freeware that does exactly what it does.

CCleaner is very good but if you like a TuneUp-style interface for nothing then check these out:

Toolwiz (Free)

Like all good programs Toolwiz makes a backup before executing any cleaning action. So very easy to roll back changes. CCleaner does this also. Toolwiz UI is really good and I like how it tells you your boot-up time, what starts at boot-up (and how LONG each of those items adds to start-time) etc. Its also got a bunch of other goodies like Time Freeze & an encrypted File Locker etc.

A list here if youre interested.

Check out the "God Mode" tweak here, a good one! But careful as it really IS a God Mode revealing all the hi-level tweakers that Windows keeps hidden for a reason. If youre a Windows geek this is no trouble though :D

Not used a 'tune up tool' since Windows 98. As mentioned you can just use the built in 'msconfig' to control start up items and disk cleaner.. or CCleaner does the same if you like a nice UI :)

Ccleaner gives you the option to completely remove the startup item out of the registry, which msconfig doesn't.

It used to be good and was quite convenient for accessing some of the more hidden options in Windows, but they've gone overboard with it in recent years and there's too much focus on automated processes that automatically do things that it doesn't need to do.

Tweak apps are largely irrelevant these days anyway, Windows 7 simply doesn't need them and you're only compromising your system's stability by tweaking the hell out of it.
