Hi all.

I have now had my 197 for about a six weeks and I was wondering if anyone had an ideas on how to either extract more power from the car or more importantly remove the flat spots in the acceleration curve (Spaz will know what I mean by this).

Looking back at Spaz's detailing thread I noticed that he has had his tuned (which helped with the flat spots) up in Leeds however I live down in Somerset so thats further than I am really willing to travel.

I took mine to RS Tuning in Leeds, K-Tec use the same map also. Superchips have recently released a map too but I'm not sure what that one is like.

Does anyone know of tuning places either in somerset or around somerset where I could get the 197 remapped?

I have found the following:

http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2480

Has anyone had any experience with them?

Cheers

EDIT:

Alo found the following:

Exhaust - http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2275 (Increase of 7bhp across the rev range)
Induction kit - http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2416 (Increase of 5+ BHP across the rev range).

These seem to be pretty good and would add 12bhp or so and I can only assume would add to the increase of 9bhp from the map making a total of 215BHP (194+12+9= 215)

Only question is are they worth it? Given that the BHP gains are supposedly across the entire rev range both upgrades could be quit beneficial.

KTec in Dorset would be your best bet as they are Renault specialists if you don't want to make a trek up to Leeds. Not sure about the BHP claims though, seem high for an exhaust and ind kit on an already highly tuned lump.

Thanks for the input. Your point about the gains is what was running through my head when I saw the potential gains figures.

Ktec does look like a option, I think I will contact them when I am actually awake tommorow.

:)

Although rereading it the ad does say across the rev range so I guess at some pointin the range there could be a 7 odd bhp increase for an exhaust, but I doubt it'll be peak power.

They come with flat spots out of the factory these days? Scandal

Sadly a lot of cars do, manufacturers have to map for emissions and 'worst case' scenarios with regards to quality of fuel etc.

I take you have never driven a 197 then?

I will quote a response from Spaz (who also drives a 197) when I asked him about it:

You are right about the flat spots too, they are very annoying, but I had my car remapped some time ago to give it a load more low down torque and it also got rid of these flat spots making it a LOT more pleasant to drive, it's still got nothing below 2000rpm but where before it had a big nasty spot between about 2.5 - 3k and another about 4.5k (I think) they have gone completely and revs very cleanly upto 7500rpm.

At the moment tuning options are quite thin on the ground, about the only things to do are:

Remap
Panel Filter (current induction kits seem to make it lose power)
Cat back exhausts - there are 2 cats on the car, one in the manfold and another further down the system like normal, yozzasport do a secondary decat cat back system thingy.

I tried to go for the full exhaust route including a new manifold, however the manifold is very tricky to fit as it would require either engine removal to get at it from above or removing a lot of suspension components to do it from underneath. Became obvious why no one else had produced a complete system yet which is a shame as Simpson Race Exhausts who I went to said some extra power could definately be had as the standard manifold had inequal length pipes (proper word escapes me for now!)

All I would say you should consider getting for the time being is a remap, panel filter and the yozzasport exhaust, but for that you're looking at about £900 inc fitting, which you'll probably only gain around 10bhp from.

I would say the remap is nearly essential, the other 2 is whether you think it would be worth it or not, if the exhaust was cheaper I'd probably get one, but at £500 it's a lot for what it is.

I think the usual cams and throttlebodies are in development but couldn't tell you if or when they'll be ready.

Probably been rambling a lot so hope the above makes some kind of sense :p

Be careful about all these quoted gains from this and that, if you divide the number they say you will gain by 2 you will probably be closer to the mark

Thanks Spaz that is very helpful.

At the moment I am only really looking at the remap. I only thought I would mention the induction kit and the exhaust as the potential gains seemed quite large (although 'dyno proven') and I was doubtful.

Thanks I will take a look :)

Yep. Straight exhaust, sports cat & a good cold feed induction kit will all give a few more horses, but the flat spots will always be there (unless you do major work to the engine itself or something).

I thought that is what you meant although I just thought I would make sure.

Cheers all for the input.
