Ok, i bought a tuniq tower last week from OC for building my new machine, had it all setup but over the course of the last week found the motherboard (Asus striker extreme) had developed a problem (CPU INIT).

I've decided to RMA the board but this leaves me in a bit of a situation regarding the heatsink, mainly due to the fact that the backplate is glued to the back of the board.

Now i haven't tried removing the backplate yet but i can only imagine how difficult it will be and even if i do manage to get it off i expect the backplate to become unusable, certainly the adhesive on the plate will be greatly reduced.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for removing, replacing or repairing the backplate for when my new motherboard arrives.

Cheers.

I used a hairdryer to warm up the old sticky stuff so it peels off easier.

Then I bought some adhesive pads from a DIY store, cut it into strips and stuck them onto the backplate where the original adhesive stuff was.

I didn't peel the sticky cover off the side of the pad that sticks to the motherboard, so it makes it easy to remove the heatsink if you ever need to.

similar thing happened to me. in the end i managed to get the plate off with a butter knife being very careful. it did take about 15 mins though. I then put strips of insulation tape across the area (probably about 10 pieces on each side) so that it was thick and soft and then attached it to the underneath of the new mobo and it worked fine

Its only a double sided sticky pad that can be purchased elsewhere, anyway your better off not using the pad for this simple reason that if you change the board, the backplate can be removed without problems.

Regards.

Don't bother using the sticky pads next time you get a HSF, if you need to hold it in place during assembly just use some masking tape.

No hair dryer so I simply left it running orthos with the fan disconnected. Once it got really hot I turned off PSU switch and removed HSF as fast as humanly possible then ripped the backplate off. The entire sticky pad still remained at the back of the mobo. Didn't bother putting sticky pad on the new mobo.
