Turbo Boost?

I was just talking to my cousin who bought an overclocked system from OCUK and he explained that his OC basically ramps up the speed as you push the CPU.

Now I didn't do this because I bought a mobo and CPU seperately. Is this something built into the CPU/motherboard or do OCUK do something to make this a possibility? Sorry if I sound noobish here, I've been out of the loop for some time with overclocking. Is this now a standard thing or something that is added with the OCUK bundles?

Ah OK. So are these preset values or something that can be changed in the BIOS or some piece of software then? Or does it just happen automatically?

For example, my chip runs up to 4GHz without issue apparently. Do I set parameters somewhere for this (obviously having tested it before just typing in numbers)? How do OCUK set this up on their prebuilt systems?

You can disable Turbo boost in the BIOS.

I have my i7 920 @ 4ghz with the multiplier of 20 with the BCLK at 200 with Turbo boost disabled, but if you want to, some people run with this enabled with BCLK 190 and when the cpu is stressed the multiplier will increase to give 4ghz.

Hopefully the above is what your after :)
 
As RJC says, some people use turbo when overclocking, some dont, currently running 193 bclk turbo enabled.
 
Oh I see, so you still overclock the settings and test it, then turn the turbo boost on so the CPU throttles down when all that power isn't needed? I get it now. Cheers guys. Sorry for the strange questions, I've been out of overclocking for a while so just collecting up useful information once more :)
 
It happens automatically (can be disabled in BIOS), but the amount of boost depends on the number of active cores and varies with different processors.

For example the i7 920 can have up to two 'bins' of Turbo Boost (2 x the base clock of 133MHz) when one or two cores are active and one bin (133Mhz) when 3 or 4 cores are active. The newer i5 & i7s have better Turbo Boost, so for example the i7 860 can have up to 5 bins (665Mhz).

If you overclocking then each 'bin' of boost is more so you have to allow for that when considering the maximum speed.
 
Yes, but I would enable turbo boost if you want a lower BLCK like Setter is using, other wise you may start get stability problems if you have a BLCK of 200 then enable turbo boost.
 
Generally speaking, its a bit easier to overclock with turbo enabled, though this leaves my ram running at 1547mhz, whereas at 20x200 the ram would run at its rated 1600mhz.
 
Each cpu has a default multiplier, the i7 920 is 20x, with turbo boost enabled it raises to 21x, some people like mentioned above will use this to get there cpu to say 4ghz, were I keep mine at 20x (turbo boost disabled) to get me to 4ghz and this allows me to run my ram at 1600mhz (recommended speed for my ram)

Speedstep will reduce the multiplier to 6x when the cpu is idle, when stressed will raise to 20x or 21x if you have turbo boost enabled.
 
So do I essentially overclock it as I would normally, then turn on Turbo Boost in the BIOS and when it needs to go to the top level, it uses the settings I have set when overclocking? Then when idling/lower, it just throttles down automatically?
