TURBO-CHARGING - Is the Future! :)

That can't be right, there's not enough O to balance that equation. I thought it was mostly CO + NO -> CO2 + N2 ??

There is a good description of the process here. Some of the oxygen comes from reducing the nitrogen oxides, but bare in mind that an engine under narrowband sensor control is always swinging either side of stoichiometric, so there will be extra oxygen present during the lean periods which the cat can store.

I wonder if high flow cats will become standard next. A little thought about fact is that cats also reduce efficiency by making it harder to push the exhaust gasses through them. If your car lives on the motorway, a de-cat is probably better for the environment than a catted car IMO.

Rubbish, its much cleaner with less HC's and NOx. The real polluting gases and particulates.

First came around in Ships iirc.

I was under the impression Supercharged plane engines are more commonplace in the 1930 - 40's?

They were, simply because the technology was better developed but that's the period when turbo's were first used in a production application.

Both were common but superchargers seemed to be preferred towards WW2.

There are some truly weird aero engines about.

Lovely old chap I went to see a couple of weeks ago has a 4 cylinder 2-stroke supercharged radial aero engine. Completely loopy and apparently very highly strung.

Then again - he does have Little Nellie sat opposite that though to balance it out a bit.

Oh great, dump valves coming to a Corsa near you soon?!

How much are Turbo conversion ¬_¬

How many dump valves have your heard on renault clios? Can't say I've heard any dump valves on corsa VXR's either.

Having test driven the corsa VXR (1.6 turbo) and the clio 1.2 turbo - I can say that small modern turbocharged engines are very good.

Saying that, my fiesta has a turbo as well. Are there any diesels nowadays that aren't turbocharged?

The way I look at it is that a small engine with a turbo gives you the best of both worlds. Efficiency when you're cruising below the spooling threshold and then power when you're on boost.
