MUAhahahahahaha!
on sunday morning my freind rang me and said theres a TD astra on *popular auction site* near you for 250 quid, go check it out... to cut a long story short-ish..
its an M reg 5 door LS, MOTd till jan and taxed for another 3 months, its not imaculate but it isent an absolute shed. and best of al has 82k miles on a 1.7 isuzu TD engine - oh how much i smiled. within an hour of it on my drive the anti tamper cover on the fuel screw was off and an MBC was fitted, last night a cone filter made its way into the engine bay and today a boost guage. i am quite happy so far but theres much more to do (decat/back box/take polo out of fuel pump/see what else i can do:))
i dont know if it will be as quick as the nova was but we can hope so, the most i have seen from 1.7s is 130bhp, so it wont set the world on fire but it will make me smile all the way down the strip this year:)
just wanted to shae this with you all, also does anyone near leedsbradford have a G-meter and would like to go for a little run for some figures once its done?

also if anyone has any infomation about using veg oil (i mean in the way of paying tax on it and not in the way of what will and wont work) please could you email me or ad me to msn or something?

pics to follow!

cheers! Dan

*edit - are we allowed to say *popular auction site* in the real word?

Knock your self out, most just say ebay. I have a 306 DT I like it but it sucks, I would even dream of "moding" it!

Interested to see what you do get out of it (inc proper timed 0-60 runs), at least it was cheap :)

And it won't be as fast as the nova due to the weight.

i would like to know the exact waights of them both, the nova does waigh less but dident have an intercooler and was a 1.5, also has a smaller turbo than the astra.
the astra does come on boost a little bit later than the nova did, but there will be more available. we will see if the extra power will overcome the waight.

130 BHP From a 1.7 TD Engine

My Peugeot 205 1.8 Turbo diesel is only 78 BHP lol, so how can you get that figure

Because its not a crap diesel engine like the 1.8TD ;)

He did also say that its the MOST he has seen with a 1.7TD isuzu engine. Its not all that common.

from haynes "vauxhall/opel diesel engines" book i have...

1.5 TD(isuzu) - 66bhp @ 4600rpm / 132 nm @ 2400rpm
1.7 TD(isuzu) - 82bhp @ 4400rpm / 124lbs/ft @ 2400rpm
1.7 TD(gm) - 67bhp @ 4500rpm / 132nm @ 2400

i dont know why it measured the gm and 1.5 in "nm" and the 1.7 isuzu in lbs/ft - but can someone convert it for a better idea please?

i would liek to point out whilst i still can the most i have seen from the 1.5 with no intercooler is 99bhp, i cant rememeber the torque. and there was a print out for it.
the 130bhp i have seen quoted for the 1.7 was not backed up with anything so your not allowed to flame me if you find out otherwise:)

i borrowed a boost guage yesterday, and it was boosting at 11psi, so i turned the mbc in half a turn and it was still boosting at 11psi, nother half a turn, still 11psi, so i pulled it off and made sure i would stop if the boost did go too high, it stopped at 16 psi, so i turned the fuel screw another quater of a turn, 20 psi, but it doesent feel that much quicker than 11psi, it is but its not loads like.. and its not smoking that much iether, wich i think is all to do with the cat, so its booked in at a mates garage for decat and back box from my nova on wednesday, well worth it becouse its only costing me a crate of stella:) but i started having trouble with the electrics last night and i just dont know what it is, suspect altenator even tho the guy said it is a new one, it doesent look new, i still have the nova so its not a problem to take it off that.

thats it for now, will be back to bore you all some more:P

who was it that was using veg oil in his transit? is he still around? would really like to know more becouse i think i do/would do enough miles to be worth it.

thanks, Dan

SB110 is the guy, and yeah he still posts :)

As for the alternator, IIRC they are known to fail frequently on the Isuzu lumps - does the rev counter work properly?

Cool- are you going to claim this one is uber fast like you did the Nova? :D

change that to prove the nova was uber fast if you dont remeber. i never tried made it sound like anything it wasent.

anyway, yeah the rev counter gave up the other day, about 2 days before the battery died all together, the charge light goes off when the engine is started, thats what threw me, thinking it was fine, but anyway the altenators coming off the nova and onto the astra tomorrow, if there the same, if not will be at the scrap yards:)

You rang? :)

If you want to run on veg oil, you need to look at getting hold of a few drums of used oil from a local takeaway. They've changed the rules and pushed green biofuels into the highest tax bracket and it's now the same cost to run veg oil as it is pump diesel.

You need to ring HM Customs & Revenue and ask them for an EX103 to register as a fuel producer, then you can pay the duty on the fuel you use each month by cheque.

New oil (43p/l) + duty (49p/l) = 92p/l
Used oil (free, but allow 10-15p/l for filtering) + duty (49p/l) = 59-64p/l
Pump diesel = 95p/l (ish)

Tempting as is, DO NOT **** WITH HMCR.

thanks for the reply, sb

i dident know they put the tax up on it now, quite gutted but what the hell, i have enough space in the garage to filter my own, do you use it on its own or do you mix with diesel?

are you on msn so we can have a better chat?

thanks, Dan
