Turbo Rattle?

I drove for about 40miles and the car was fine , however on the way back its developing this rattle when the turbo spools up. As a test i drove in low revs and put it into third. I'd get turbo lag but i could hear the turbo spool up slower. Just as the turbo spools it rattles and then its gone. I could be imagining it but it seems as if the turbo is spooling louder

I'm not getting any smoke , or rattle on idle so anybody think my turbo is gone or is it possibly something loose? :)

Possibly something loose, that said, on the few occasiona I've suffered a turbo failure, it did start to rattle before it went bang......

probably an exhaust bracket or something equally weird like your imagination! ;) :p:D:D:D

My old mitsubishi had bearing failure - was as the op'er described - rattle on spool then gone, no smoke, no nothing - just the death rattle.

Oh sorry - it appears I just used the word death.

:D

^ this but to be honest if it is rattling it usually smokes a lot before the rattling starts.

Yep, mine smoked like a madman before the compressor jammed on the housing and all boosts was lost but it never rattled, tbh depending on the engine its an easy part to change, took 4 hours to do mine on the drive, i can now take it off and put it back on in an hour so if you have a set of spanners it might be worth giving it a go.

That's exactly what my Leon does at the moment, sounds kind of 'normal' in the sense that it isn't a grinding noise - but still doesn't seem right.

It's in for it's service shortly so will ask the garage to have a look at it.

I'll keep an eye on this thread for any ideas though :)

I found two sources of rattling , one the bracket holding the induction kit had broke thus the kit was hitting the chassis. The dump valve was also vibrating on the head bolt screw fixed that aswell.

Will give the car a drive try tomorrow but no rattle on idle rev

Yes because obviously Abbey Motorsport have no idea how to map a Skyline. I'm using an AFCneo which isn't the best admittedly, but substantial changes to conditions will always throw out a map a small amount and sometimes thats all it takes.

In which case it hasn't been mapped very well. It shouldn't be continuously running on the ragged egde of detonation for this very reason.

To be honest, it happened during the last cold snap on a high speed motorway run and hasn't happened since. It would have been very difficult to replicate those conditions during the mapping process.

Still doing it :( , however something came to mind i remember some years back having a rattly OEM dump valve and that used to rattle before i replaced it. Sure enough when i put my finger on the top end of the dv and rev the car on idle i can feel something tap against the casing in the bov itself ( large end ) .
