Turbo timer

I have and Evo VIII FQ-300 and wondering if I should get a turbo timer? Do I need one?

The turbo on my Evo is pretty small so it spools quickly so is on boost a lot.

just let the engine tick over for 30seconds before you turn off, same result.

pretty much what ^ said. If they were needed then they would come as standard. All you need to do is let the car idle a short time before switching it off.

Don't a lot of modern turbo cars carry on running the water pump after the engine is turned off to assist with properly 'warming down' the turbo?

My Golf is a 2001 car and i'm pretty sure it runs the coolant for a minute or two after engine off if it deems it necessary.

(edit - some quick googling suggests mine will run the auxiliary water pump for 15 minutes after turning off the engine for this purpose)

Can't say I've ever felt the need on a 1.8T VW engine for 30k miles. The last quarter of a mile has two roundabouts and speed humps so it's taking it easy for a couple of minutes though. As said if they were needed they'd be fitted.

No, you don't need one.

There are more negatives about having them then good. Just sit in your car for 60 seconds on idle and turn off, same result

Well for starters it's illegal to leave a car engine running unattended in a publicly accessable place - that includes your driveway.

I have heard insurers don't like them either for similar reasons.

Provided you don't red line it then turn the engine off whilst at max revs it will be fine!
By the time you have driven down the housing estate and parked up it will have been more than long enough .

Turbo timers are for the days when turbo's were oil cooled only. Stopping the engine before letting the turbo cool would cause the oil to boil in the turbo. This is avoided by more modern turbo's which are also water cooled.

Yep, just stay off/low boost for a minute or two, doesn't take long for the turbo to spin down/cool down

I let my turbos chill for the last half mile home, that's always been the consensus.

I always just drive it steady for the last mile or two. I've only blown 2 turbos in 10k miles so this clearly works

Personally, yes get one. Such a pain having to sit there and wait. If you do it right it is connected to the handbrake so when someone tries to drive away, the engine stops.
