I've chickened out of riding into work now over the winter so am only going out on the weekends so was thinking of getting one for a quick 30 min blast each night after work.

Was looking at this one as it's cheap. Most of the other trainers are nearer the £100 mark but don't want to go that high unless it's really worth it. Any recommendations?

One thing i'm not sure about is if you can really 'go for it' as I'd imagine you can't really rock the bike with it being fixed. I'd be bored going for more than 30 mins so if I can't push on it it might not be a great idea...

I looked into these but decided against buying one.

I imagine it would get pretty boring pedaling for long periods going no where. You will need to buy a couple of free standing fans to keep you cool.

Just my views.

I have one. I find that its hard to keep motivated on it as it gets very boring.
Theres no wind in your face like real cycling so you get hot very quicky, and then your poor bike gets covered in sweat. Also, if you have laminate floors like i do, it can be quite loud and it does make a bit of a mess as little bits of rubber get thrown everywhere (which is not good news for your tyres).

Its a good investment if you dont have the option to get out for some real cycling (and you think you can keep up the motivation). My one is a basic model but still holds my bike securely. The resistance goes quite high and you can 'go for it' (as long as you dont stand up).

i also have one, a great investment if you want to keep some form in the winter
yes its hard work to keep motivated, but better then going out on back country roads in the dark. using mine i have the tv on or listen to some music to keep my mind of the boredom, also have a fan blowing on me to keep cool and a towl on the bars to keep the sweat off the bike but i think you can get a thong type cover for this

necro
I've been looking at turbos to go with my new bike and someone told me that I should get turbo tyres for using on it as it will eat my road ones
does anyone have any advise for this?

Get a cheap rear wheel on ebay and put a turbo tyre on it if you'll be using the turbo lots.

Much easier to swap wheels than swap tyres.

If they are quick release, it only takes a couple of seconds.

but then you need a rear wheel with a set of cogs that fit your derailer etc etc etc.
or do they all mostly fit anything?

You need to get a wheel with the same cassette. As long as you get the same number of sprockets, and the same brand, then you should be fine.

Doesnt need to be a good wheel. Just any old 2nd hand wheel will do. You should be able to pick one up for £15-20 on ebay.

Also, i just looked through your posts and realised you have SRAM groupset. SRAM is compatible with shimano cassettes.
