Turn a 6990 into a higher level card ?

I have known in the past that its is possible to turn a graphics card into an upgraded newer model because basically what the manufacturer sometimes does is hide available features that basically turn a slightly older card into a slightly newer model by enabling the hidden features etc.

Anyway, I have a Sapphire AMD 6990 card and I was wondering what if anything is possible with that card if anything at all ?

Any you wizards out there got any ideas please ?

p.s
overclocking it using the OC function makes the standard fan sound like a Jet engine, lol, so I prefer not to OC it very much.;)

That's sometimes done with xx50 models being "unlocked" to xx70 models, you have a xx90 model which is basically 2 cards (xx70) in one so it cannot unlock to anything (unless I missed something).

Sadly pushing more would mean OC'ing. Maybe someone who has had the card will have more insight for ya :)

cheers mate :), yea if anyone knows then please give me a shout eh ? ;)

I have just flicked the overclock switch on my amd 6990 card for the first time, but how do I tell the difference if anything has changed, will it say something that I can check in catalyst or gpuz or something like that that would confirm it is now overclocked ?

plus, what exactly is the difference anyway when you flick the switch rather than when its not flicked ? anyone know ?

Since you're already using an AIO cpu cooler would you consider putting your system under water and (excuse the brashness) overclocking the hell out of it?

its usually another bios loaded onto the card, when flicking the switch it can be in/out of the manufacturers bios to a custom one

If you download MSI Afterburner you can OC your card and use a custom fan profile to keep the noise down a little

It will oc the core to 880mhz (6970 x2)

The 6990 is still a cracking card mate, like has been mentioned already if you download MSI Afterburner you should be able to up the core and the memory frequencies in small increments which will give you more graphics processing power than the standard card had.

I noticed it is at 880mhz but wasn't sure if that was cause it was overclocked or not, but if your saying it is then it must be I guess.

Are, you guys also saying that since I bought that card more or less on the day they hit the shelfs that I have only been running it on one of the gpu's inside it and not two because I didn't flick the switch ? that's maddening if I have, lol :(

I also managed to clock it up to 930mhz and ran a few 3dmark 11 tests etc and it passed, but any higher than that it crashed.

Both GPU are used makes no difference what position the switch is set to it just runs at higher clock 880.

I fitted a water block on mine I couldn't live with the loud fan ramping up.

I got mine to 1000Mhz when I fitted an aftermarket cooler, but it made the card whine like crazy. It was slightly scary lol

my 6990 can do 935/1400 on stock voltage (performance mode)

tbh it doesn't add much FPS but every little bit helps....

now i have a 290x which gives between 50% to 100% extra performance depending on game.
