Turn-by-turn GPS navigation now free on Nokia Symbian phones

You mean like Nokia were forced to follow Android? Of course the advantage with the Nokia set up is the maps can be stored on the device instead to just downloaded when required

Android's free navigation is limited to the US. Nokia sells very few phones in the US. I doubt Nokia would give the whole world free navigation just to compete with Android in the US.

Nokia bought one of the two map providers (NavTeq) a couple of years ago. This news is a knock-on from that more likely.

Nah, they are undoubtably following google (and the rest of the market) but thats no bad thing. Full navigation wasnt selling too well anyway. This is a fairly awesome announcement, what a selling point for Nokia phones.

Cheers, downloading now :D i know Ovi Maps comes with the N900 - i know this is Symbian free voice nav but is there any indication that the N900/Maemo will follow suit? :)

Impressed with this, it works well in off line mode and finds satelites much faster than my aging sat nav. It works with my 5800 well, either portrait or landscape, it also doesn;t seem choosy about a clear view to the sky. It directed me home from the office sitting nicely on the little shelf between the speedo and clock so I could see it well through the steering wheel. It also stores all local amenities in offline mode so I could find nearest petrol etc.

Very impressed.

Can anyone help me? I am using Ovi Suite to try install Maps 3.0 on my N82 but it says it can't because the component is built-in. However the phone won't allow me to remove the version installed on the phone.

I just can't see my buying another Nokia... not a terrible operating system with Symbian but they seem to have fallen over with their hardware design lately.

I think the N82 is on. Currently installing now. This will be my last Nokia phone, Symbian and Nokia just doesn't cut it anymore. The Maps application didn't even work since I got this phone

Mike - only briefly looked into it but it seems the only way to avoid the problem I stated above is this:

1. Delete cities folder and qf file from your memory card
2. Factory reset the phone with *#7370#
3. Disable any power savers like screen savers, etc
4. Now use nokia maps updater to update to v3.0
5. Run nokia maps 3 first on the phone
6. Connect to your PC using PC suite mode and transfer maps.

Just tried and it worked. Don't forget to backup :)

EDIT - I thought this was free. Just opened and it said something about a 90 day license?
