turn old pc in to website server

hi guys

i have an old computer and was thinking how hard would it be for me to set it up to host my website as i need php support and stuff so this would be a nice easy cheap way to do it

As long as you have the software, and a riuter that can route everything incoming on port 80 to the server, not hard at all. The software is the hardest part. Oh, and your upload to the internet will be pants.

If you have any O/S higher than Windows 2000 you should be fine.

Windows XP can install IIS (by the add/remove software / windows components) which is used to run the website on.

You don't neccessarily need a router either (as you can configure a software firewall if you are directly connected to the internet via a modem).

It is pretty easy and doesn't require a monster of a PC to run.

Use Debian pure for your operating system:

and this will show you how to set up a web server successfully on Debian.

If these guides prove too difficult/complicated search in google for setting up a LAMP server. Linux is amazing easy to install these days so I doubt you will run into any problems!

LAMP is definitely the way to go with an old machine. Plus you'll probably learn a few new things as you set it up
