Hi,

Has anyone got any recommendations on some good software, to turn a regular webcam, into a security camera ?

All i need it to do, is point in one area, and constantly record, over writing the oldest recording.

Don't need any viewing from the web, just the ability to go back and view the recordings if something has happenend.

Any suggestions?

You could try Vitamin D - http://www.vitamindinc.com/

Instead of constantly recording, it just records when there is movement in the field of view of the camera.

I used it in my bedroom to monitor what went on when we had some decorators around, it was good. Picked up everything, and didn't record anything where there wasn't any movement. :)

Ran with this on a decent core2duo laptop and it seemed to be very heavy on resources, even though it was only recording during movement. CPU usage was at a good constant 50% thus making the fan go at full pelt.

Has anyone played with a few different ones and come up with the best?

Don't mean to be cheeky by not wiping my own ass, but hey if someone else has already gone through the pain, then please share.

Looking at their site, this looks brilliant - would be worth a cheap Quad setup to manage the whole house/surround. Certainly a lot cheaper than the standard 'security' setups.

:D Sorry - must be me - but that made me chuckle!

Does look good doesn't it. Saves the file in MP4.. But as i said, it does seem to be heavy on resources and this was just on a one camera low res setup.. It could become expensive on electrical to have a quad running 24/7 at full pelt.
