I read that if you are going to be stopped for more than 4 seconds then it is worth turning your engine off and starting it again as it will use less fuel than leaving it running idle for those 4 seconds, don't know if this is true with older cars tho.
its different for all cars, but 4seconds is too short. more like a min or 2.
i always switch off at railway crossings because i know im gona be there for a good 5minutes (frieght trains take forever to come, and go past...). However at traffic lights that change in less than a minute? no way.
I am sure it was only 4 seconds, I think I may have read it in the manual for my 335i but cannot remember now.
BMW Efficient Dynamics switches the car off evey time you take it out of gear at a set of lights so there must be some fuel saved in that short time or it would be pointless.
