Turn Your Engines Off

Oh noes, the daily mail has a story we don't like. Seriously though, it is a stupid idea. Anyone with a slight amount of common sense turns there engines off in big traffic jams anyway, when you know your not going to be moving for a while.

Ooer, that's just down the road from me. Freakin' Nazis!!

I sure hope it's not adopted by West Sussex County Council as a permanent scheme througout the region, that would be plain ridiculous. Infact, it is plain ridiculous.

Idiots.

So whats the defining factor between being stopped, and being stopped in a traffic jam? Are we going to get vigilante traffic wardens slapping £20 fines on everyone who stops at traffic lights?

Hah.

Good luck with that.

Some old cars don't like being started and stopped over and over and my carb is one of them.

If its a long wait like more than a min or two then yes otherwise o hell no.

I read that if you are going to be stopped for more than 4 seconds then it is worth turning your engine off and starting it again as it will use less fuel than leaving it running idle for those 4 seconds, don't know if this is true with older cars tho.

its different for all cars, but 4seconds is too short. more like a min or 2.

i always switch off at railway crossings because i know im gona be there for a good 5minutes (frieght trains take forever to come, and go past...). However at traffic lights that change in less than a minute? no way.

I am sure it was only 4 seconds, I think I may have read it in the manual for my 335i but cannot remember now.

BMW Efficient Dynamics switches the car off evey time you take it out of gear at a set of lights so there must be some fuel saved in that short time or it would be pointless.

the ED beemers start up a lot quicker and with less turns than most other cars though.

Great I live near Shoreham, you buy a car with air-con so you don't have to sit there sweating your knackers off in traffic.

West Sussex is becoming very anti-car. Worthing is a complete nightmare for parking with charges of £1.60 an hour. It's patrolled by armies of NCP wardens who ticket you for anything.

Horsham isn't much better with no long term facilities so it's a tenner a day.
