turning my media server to a vm for folding too ???

so one of the guys at work has got onto folding and in doing so has got me to get my finger out my rear and go back into the buisness of it, since i havent for about 2 years now quiet abit has changed an linux is a lot easier etc and the possibility of vm's is easier :) so what ive read is linux folds a hell of a lot better so i was thining of vmwareing it so now my current server a

pent 4 1.6ghz
1.5gb ram
60gb hdd with 2 externals

is going to end up a

amd 64 939 1.8ghz
1.5-3gb of ram can all be depending on whats compatable etc
60gb hdd
80gb hdd
160gb hdd
and 2 externals


now the question is would it be wise to switch to a vmware on the later build and have a ubuntu vm or 2 just to fold followed by a server 2003 vm to share ??


and can i link my usb externals to share on the 2003 ?

or ... would it be worthwhile me just having 2 seperate machines one for my sharing and one for folding ?
 
I'd say, first check in here :D

Then I'd say, neither of those machines are worth folding on really :( But check with the linux folding guys in the folding link above they know more than me.
 
I agree with Biffa.

Neither spec is worth folding on. You're looking at a C2D with 4mb cache minimum these days to make it worthwhile. That or atleast an 8800GT for the graphics card version of the folding client.


Now ofcourse every little helps, but the power costs to points ratio would be too high IMHO.
 
Underclock them, replace all the HDDs with one big one to save electriciy and schedule it to sleep/wake when you need it
 
eh ????? not aslking about energy saving here ... im going to be in a flat of 8 peeps its not going to matter much lol
