I'm looking to buy a new car within the next few months and am wondering if DRL's are "turn offable" by default or does it vary depending on manufacturer?

Having done a little reading apparently it has to be turned off by a dealer / mechanic. Annoying!!! Silly mazda

Do people prefer to have these switched off then? Genuine question, because I know that some people do find they're a bit too 'blingy'. They are a fairly valid safety feature in terms of making the car a bit more visible to other road users though.

Bit of a marmite thing I think personally.
I can completely understand the safety benefits in Scandinavia / Canada where they can have months of dusky conditions but in the UK they just seem an annoying fashion accessory with zero safety benefit.

Newer VW require main dealer to turn them off, iirc they are now mandatory on new cars (April 2011) onwards. but dong quote me on that one

It all depends if the vehicle you're driving received type approval after a certain date.
Before that date DRL's were optional, after that date they were a requirement - wasn't it February last year?
Anyway, cars manufactured after that date still have optional DRL's - it's only new cars/models that require type approval.
I'll use the Skoda Octavia as an example:

Octy 2 manufactured before cut-off date - DRL's optional. Can be switched on/off
Octy 2 manufactured after cut-off date - DRL's optional. Can be switched on/off
Octavia 3 type-approval gained after cut-off date - DRL's compulsory, should be no way of switching them off.

The majority of cars on the road right now you should be able to switch off. However as the new models arrive they will be compulsory.

Same with VW, but I'm not sure they are if the car doesn't have an OBC.
I have an OBC on my 2010 leon (VAG B/W pixel display) and the setting is missing but you can toggle it using the indicator stalk and turning the ignition on a few times, should be fairly easy to google. Worst case, VAGCOM time.
BMWs have it in iDrive, it's linked to the individual key holder so one can have it on and the other off.

Even if they are not an 'option' to turn off via the normal settings within the vehicle, its fairly easy to set the setting to 'off' using a OBD cable and software.
